Interesting and surprisingly the writer scores some points with even me, a Mike Love non-believer, but the author doesn't cite one non-Brian Wilson Beach Boy album better than ones Brian was involved in.
No doubt that Mike is a more enthusiastic live performer than Brian and yes, as much as I enjoyed seeing Brian and Band do SMiLE, it was clear to us there that Brian was propped up big time. It was disturbing in a way. Brian was not really playing the keyboards where he sat behind and I couldn't tell if he was really playing that big white bass at the final set where he did the BB's greatest hits.
Maybe Brian should have been allowed to fade away into the sunset with the Beach Boys shining or sinking without him being part of them at all. Too bad Carl Wilson wasn't more forceful and step-up more than he actually did because I believe he did have the vocal and musical creds Mike Love didn't have. Dennis Wilson has some great solo music but he had his substance abuse demons too.
The Beach Boys' story was and is(because Brian is still alive) fascinating. It is possible(not likely) that Brian, Mike and Al could put their egos and illnesses aside and make one last great album as old men.

While I will admit that Mike Love is a solid frontman and they put on a great show, as to the continuing saga of the post Wilson Beach Boys- is look at the albums after Pet Sounds. The store is open but not much in it.
