About 4 years ago Bob Dylan was down on the Jersey Shore, near where I live, to perform in a concert at Asbury Park. I believe he was visiting Bruce Springsteen at his home in Rumson, NJ. He went out for a walk around the neighborhood in Rumson by himself the afternoon before the evening concert, and someone in the neighborhood spotted him wandering up and down the street (Rumson is a very upper-scale town in New Jersey with homes easily in the seven figures) and I guess he was dressed "very casually." This neighbor called the police fearing some guy who they thought clearly didn't belong in "that neighborhood" was wandering the streets, possibly looking to burglarize an empty home, or do something else nefariously. So the police arrive and see this "homeless-looking" guy walking up the street and stop and ask him what he is doing there. Story goes that he told them he was just out for a walk. The cops (both young guys in their twenties) asked him for some ID and he said his name was Bob Dylan. The cops laughed and asked him for ID again. So Bob pulled out his wallet and showed them his ID and the cops were floored when they realized who he was. They profusely apologized and asked him if he needed any assistance. He said no, he was just out for a walk and was planning to appear that night at the concert in Asbury Park. The cops, all red-faced, asked him for his autograph, and then got back in their patrol car and left.
True story. Made the New York local news on TV that evening....

I was very much in agreement with this. I'm quite surprised to read some of the con opinions. For a lifetime of work, it's a no-brainer. A great honor for him, a great honor for the United States, a great honor for the Boomer Generation, and a great honor for rock and roll.

I applaud this choice. The timing is kind of weird to me though. I need to read more about it.
But yeah, the Dylan haters have come out in full force.

No reaction yet from Dylan.
Just heard on the news "If he don't show up, he shouldn't get it (the award)"!

I fail to see the point of ignoring the recognition of one's life work by a legitimate organization. Is Bob simply trying to be anti-establishment because he still thinks it is cool to do so? Why ignore an offer of simple appreciation of your work? Is nothing in the so called establishment worth his time or attention? Seems kind of rude to just act like nothing has happened. If you don't want the award or don't care about the recognition can't you at least be polite and issue a statement to that effect. The world is only trying to tell you we admire your contribution to society.

I just re-read John's post above. Apparently Dylan will get the award and they will have the ceremony on December 10th, with or without him.
Was there a deadline to respond? He's on the road right now until November 23rd, playing shows nearly every night.
Maybe he had a big after-tour vacation break scheduled and has to take a little time to decide if he wants to attend.

LOL everyone is getting uptight about Dylan's silence. People want him to fawn over it and Dylan will never do that. Dylan certainly did not fawn over Obama when he was awarded the presidential award and in fact had some critical words to RS I do not think any Rock and Roll star should ever accept awards like Knighthoods or Presidential awards. Any award from so-called royalty is particularly hypocritical and McCartney and Jagger, among others, should have told the Queen to shove it up her ass! The Beatles started it with those stupid MBEs. Maybe Dylan thinks this should have been given to him in 1966 or 1967, when he was writing all of those great lyrics not as some stupid, lame "lifetime" achievement award given to old farts about to die. It would have been revolutionary to have awarded this to Bob in 1966. In 2016 it feels like aging hippies at the Society wanting to bask one last time in their old, faded 1960's so--called glory. I think Dylan picks up that vibe more than anything.

LOL, I have been watching his website for any mention but missed that. I suspect an employee put that in but I bet it did come from Dylan himself to remove it! I love Dylan so much more for his silence. Look, an actual Academy member is slamming Dylan: www.msn.com/en-us/music/news/nobel-academy-member-slams-arrogant-dylan/ar-AAjg6UT?ocid=spartandhpSwedish Academy Member Per WastbergWhat is the crybaby and what an arrogant, self-important asshole! The Nobel Prizes are a farce, a joke! Just look at the 2009 Nobel Peace Award to a rookie President Obama who hadn't done anything up to then that would come close to justifying such an award other than proving it is all intellectual hocus-pocus bullshit!

You just contradicted yourself John. You called the Nobel Prizes a farce and a joke. Then you say Obama didn't do anything to "justify such an award." So that implies the award is supposedly a worthy recognition, but because Obama got it, the whole thing is B.S. Let's look at some of the otherpeople who have received this intellectual hocus-pocus piece of Bullshit; 1) Albert Einstein 2) Marie Curie 3) Eugene O'Neill 4) Enrico Fermi 5) Yitzak Rabin 6) Shimon Perez 7) Toni Morrison 8) Mikael Gorbachev 9) Elie Wiesel 10) Mother Teresa 11) Henry Kissenger 12) Anwar Sadat 13) Milton Friedman 14) Martin Luther King, Jr. 15) T.S. Eliot If you have something against Obama, fine. But to call the Nobel Prizes a farce and a joke? Did these 15 people listed above deserve recognition for what they did with their lives? Your free and loose comments on certain subjects continue to amaze me John! I don't think the Nobel Awards are shit just because you have a gripe against Obama. The 15 people above appreciated being recognized for what they believed in. If Bob Dylan wants to be arrogant and refuse to recognize that others feel that his life's work is relevant and deserves attention and appreciation now as a lifetime achievement that is his choice. Then why the hell did he write his music and perform it for the public all these years? To have your name mentioned and listed with some of the world's most renowned individuals is a high honor and the Nobel Awards attempt to recognize that.

He was still a young man making his mark with his lyrics. Dylan has been recognized by his native country with the Presidential Award, and the Kennedy Center Honors. Those are not shit awards. Now the world is telling Dylan he made a significant contribution to society. What more can one ask from a lifetime's work. The awards say that you made a difference with what you did. You will be remembered long after you are gone. Whether Dylan gives a shit about the award is one thing. I am glad he got it, because his lyrics especially made a difference to me and how I saw the world. And succeeding generations will know that too.

It has barely even registered with me. And I don't expect Dylan to go so far as to "fawn". But I do think that Bob Dylan is far too old now to be acting like a rebellious young Rock Star. Time to show a little humility and appreciation at this stage of his life, IMO. I always thought he was a jerk the way he was so distant, ignorant, and decidedly mysterious and vague throughout his entire career, but at least he was so much younger then; he's older than that now.

I've heard people critize Dylan for being arrogant. Well, it could be said that refusing an award IS an act of humility. One does not create art for the glory. The fame and fortune are nice, but should not be the motivation. As a true artist, one shows appreciation by continuing to do what one does, while always trying to improve and to strive with the idea that your best work is still to come.
There are people who have received a certain amount of fame and fortune who often just "mail it in" when doing a show or creating their next piece. Then, they gladly accept an award and thank all their fans. Excuse me, but you can thank me by being honest and giving me your best every time. It's like an athlete. I don't want your autograph. I want your homerun, touchdown, goal, or three pointer. And, you don't need my adulation. You need the satisfaction of a job well done. Same with an artist. Awards don't mean a thing compared to the satisfaction of having been able to dig deep inside of oneself to get to the essence of oneself and society. It always gets me when a music star creates a great piece of work and then is disappointed when they don't win an award. Sorry, buddy, but you just made yourself sad when you should have been thinking back to how happy you were when you put the final mix of your album and you knew that you had created something really good. You ruined your own satisfaction by grousing over not getting the award. Pity on you.
Yes, for many of us, we like the appreciation of a job well done. I get it. But, do you need an award and ceremony to value your work? I don't. Too embarrassing. A simple "thank you" goes a long way to making me feel that my work was valued. Dylan may end up saying something or even accepting the award in person, while delivering a profound speech. But, if he doesn't, I will actually understand why. Humility is silent.

Dylan may end up saying something or even accepting the award in person, while delivering a profound speech. But, if he doesn't, I will actually understand why. Humility is silent. The Nobel Committee has on behalf of the world offered a simple "Thank you" to Bob for his life's work. A simple "You're Welcome;" would be the human thing to do. Ignoring a kind gesture seems a little selfish to an admiring public to which you gave your work. Maybe Bob will go and accept. Maybe he won't. But acting like you are the only human on the planet when it comes to others wanting to express their thanks to you seems to go against why and who you meant your artistry be directed at all these years. Without the rest of the world what would Bob have been directing his work towards all these decades? No man is an island. We all share this planet and our feelings account for something as well. He should think along those lines when deciding to act as if nothing has happened.

He should think along those lines when deciding to act as if nothing has happened. If one person gives someone a gift, it IS good and right to say "Thank you." But, an unsolicited honor by a group with whom one has no ties? Not necessarily. I did not elect the Nobel Committee to speak for me. Nor, do the Pulitizer, the Emmy/Oscar/Tony/Grammy people, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, or any other institution. The Nobel people have never asked for my opinion. In fact, the Nobel people can only speak for themselves. They are a bunch of Scandanavian people who give out prizes. If the Congan National Academy of World Arts and Science (doesn't exist), were a super major institution in Conga and they gave their highest honor to Dylan, or anyone else of note, why would an honoree have any obligation to respond, let alone appear to accept the honor. The Nobel is simply just a group of people who have taken upon themselves to honor who THEY think is worthy. What's the metric? They really are no different than major league baseball writers who vote in baseball hall of fame inductees. Just a group. When you look at past honorees, they are no brainers anyway. Einstein? Mother Teresa? Marie Curie" Duh, who wouldn't give them a prize. Look. I'm not a cynic. I know that honors like an Academy Award or Pulizter or a major sport's Hall of Fame are meaningful, but they are also really nothing. Getting one or not getting one does not really determine ones greatness. Is Dylan now great because of the award? Maybe, but not because of the Nobel committee. My gosh, Steven Hawking doesn't have a Nobel prize. What's up with that? I'm sure he isn't losing any sleep on that. Okay. Here's the nutshell. Yes, the Nobel Prize is a great honor. Bob Dylan deserves it. It would be cool if he shows up to accept it and if he gives a really good speech. But, the Nobel people represent only them, not the world. Dylan did not need their validation. In fact, the Nobel prize is NOT a "thank you," as some might say. It's a "job well-done." Well, Bob already knows he's done well. I think that if one is honored by as many people as Dylan has, he should have the right to accept and deal with them in any way he sees fit. He's accepted some and let others go. I"m sure he'll eventually give a "thank you."

LOL, I believe Dylan is thinking, "Why this award now, do they think I am going to die?" And if he does go to the ceremony, he will never say what will please these people. Dylan is not a lengthy nor trained public speaker. He would be short and surreal which would undoubtedly rub everyone wrong! Even a simple "Thank you" would be mocked! It is like John Lennon saying, "Er, thank you all very much, and God bless you," at the Foyle’s literary luncheon in 1964! www.beatlesbible.com/1964/04/23/john-lennon-attends-foyles-literary-luncheon/

Dylan finally found the words.
I remember when I was born, I was so stunned, bewildered, excited... I couldn't speak for a year. (I've sunk to stealing Gracie Allen material now!)

I think Bob's brain is as worn out as his voice. Took him two weeks for it to sink in what had happened. He better have someone help him get a tux and book his trip to Stockholm. He might forget to go otherwise......

LOL! Now everyone can chill out! I cannot believe Bob hasn't gotten blasted here yet again for not being able to make The Concert For George. Bob actually explained why with a couple of sentences at a concert at MSG before breaking into "Something." He was long-timed booked before the CFG was scheduled. But man were people pissed off here, calling it the "Snub of The Century."

Seems fortuitous a new book was just released containing all of Dylan's song lyrics going back to 1962. Review in Wall Street Journal today.

Unless Dylan really couldn't help missing the Concert For George, it was really up there with one of the most disgraceful snubs of all time. George was there for Bob at the Bob Tribute in 1992. Dylan really should have made it to the George Concert ... if he truly was able. Hell, didn't Dylan even make George and company wait on pins and needles biting their nails until the last second to see if "his majesty" would bother making the Bangladesh gig in 1971?
