There is actually a lot of material to choose from. If we stick to about your 25 songs decision that should keep the quality reasonably high. It would also be about the right number of tracks for a 2 LP set to match the Beatles 1977 set.
Maybe I’m Amazed (Paul) Love (John) If Not For You (George) Every Night (Paul) Oh My Love (John) My Love (Paul) Out Of The Blue (John)
You’re Sixteen (Ringo) Bless you (John) Silly Love Songs (Paul) Beautiful Girl (George) Stand By Me (John) Love Comes to Everyone (George)
Waterfalls (Paul) Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy) (John) Woman (John) Somebody Who Cares (Paul) No More Lonely Nights (Paul) This Is Love (George)
Don’t Know A Thing About Love (Ringo) No Other Baby (Paul) Never Without You (Ringo) Somedays (Paul) My Valentine (Paul) Grow Old Along With Me (John)
I tried to share out the material, but it is still skewed. Paul gets ten tracks, John gets eight, George gets four and Ringo three. No doubt this can be evened up further if wanted. IMO we have both presented strong sets. I would buy them in an instant. I think we can come up with really good Rock N Roll sets as well.

I'm lazy, so here's my one record compilation - all off the top of my head, thought out in about 5 minutes:
Someplace Else - George Grow Old With Me - John My Valentine - Paul Every Night Paul Love - John Woman - John Beautiful Girl - George Somedays - Paul Your Way - Paul Your Love is Forever - George From a Lover to a Friend - Paul I’d Have You Any Time - George One Day at a Time - John Starting Over - John I Still Love You - Ringo
Could probably stretch this out, but if these are the first ones that came to mind without me even thinking, then they must be the best ones for me. Tomorrow I'm making a playlist. Thanks for the game.

This is an awesome idea Stavros! I absolutely adored the 1977 compilation Love Songs. It really brought out the beauty in many songs that were always viewed as lesser cuts on Beatles albums. Three examples of songs that get the star treatment here are "I Need You," "It's Only Love" and "Every Little Thing."
I must throw myself into this solo project full force. This exercise will forever prove that the best of Solo Beatles equals the best of The Beatles!

I'd add "For No One" as the fourth song for star treatment, especially the clever ending on a suspended chord that leaves that 'unresolved' feeling. SO I look forward to your selection JSD with much anticipation. Who knows even Apple, Capital and EMI might take us up on the idea! I do believe the best of the solo Beatles was just as good as the 1960s Beatles. I think the solo work always appears to be 'weaker' because instead of writing 4 or 5 songs on an album each Beatle was looking for 8-10 more tracks to pad out their solo albums. And kc I think we can have a lot of fun with the Rock'n Roll sets which were also decent collections with a pathetic album cover.

Great point Stavros on "For No One!" It gets a special spotlight on Love Songs whereas it was just another gem on Revolver, an album packed from start to finish with great songs.

Well Stavros, this is a really interesting idea. It's so good that it stimulated me to my first post in ages and ages!
Just to give a different angle on the LOVE SONGS idea, how about this approach? The Beatles wrote many love songs of the romantic, so-in-love-with-you variety. But George wrote songs about his love of his god, John could express his loves strongly and vehemently. Paul was almost always soppy, but he does have some ballsy love songs. Ringo? He was always Ringo.
So what do you think of these?
John (6 songs) Mother Well Well Well How Do You Sleep (he once loved Paul, so this is an anti-love song I suppose) Woman Is The Nigger Of The World (love for woman-kind) Nobody Loves You When You're Down and Out Instant Karma
Paul (7 songs) Maybe I'm Amazed (for Linda) Nothing Too Much Just Out Of Sight (with Heather in mind) Oh Woman Oh Why (weird: a love gone very odd) Hi Hi Hi (sex is an aspect of some loves, yes?) Mull of Kintyre (love for a place) Letting Go A Love For You (I wanted a typical soppy one in the lists)
George (7 songs) What Is Life (For his god) Deep Blue (His loved mother dying) Hear Me Lord (one of George's great songs to his god) That Is All (maybe a woman, maybe his god - that ambivalence is in a lot of Harrisongs) So Sad Sat Singing (a great song describing achieving closeness to his god) Love Comes To Everyone
Ringo (5 songs) Beaucoups of Blues Early 1970 (love for his three brothers) Devil Woman (more sex in love) Just A Dream (very odd song; disco yes but it works) King Of Broken Hearts
I reckon that with good sequencing this would be a killer album!

I'll just point out that any consideration of 'solo-era songs must have George's "Your Love is Forever", which might, in retrospect, be his finest composition ever (well, except for 'All Things Must Pass').
The thing is -- what is a "love song"? George's songs in this vein are always religious songs/human-love songs, and can (probably by intent) be taken "either" way.
I'm sure I could make a pretty convincing argument that "Give Peace a Chance" is a love song.

Welcome back Joseph! As always a thought-provoking list. You have picked several songs I wouldn't have thought of for this exercise but upon further reflection, they make all the sense in the world! By the way, this was your post 909. Will there be one after 909?

This is the reason that I didn't want to impose rules about the selection. Like Panther so correctly points out. "what is a 'love song'? That is hardcore solo Beatles, for hardcore Beatles fans, Joseph. I am going to create my own mp3 playlist and play around with the sequencing for a week or so. Maybe you'll even agree with me when I post it on here?

"Your Love is Forever" is a true lost gem of a song. How has it gone unnoticed for so long? I would have put it on my list, but the intro is soooooooooo long. Jeez, 50 seconds! There is a saying, "Don't bore us, get to the chorus." George, your love might be forever, but so is your intro.

I agree that "Your Love Is Forever" is a beautiful love song, and one of George's all-time best ever.

"Your Love is Forever" is a true lost gem of a song. How has it gone unnoticed for so long? I don't know about "lost": I think the song is always getting mentioned favourably. I also frown on the song being labelled as a "gem" -- it's a little "forced" for me (lyrically).
But if you want a solo LOVE SONGS album to mirror the Beatles' group album, then it's a good candidate. But as you know, I favour a broader definition of "love song".
PS Mr Damm asked was there going to be a post, one after 909. Well yes, this is it!

How could we possibly wait these 50 seconds, a virtual eternity!! I take it you're not a jazz fan? Depends on the who's playing and the arrangement. George was not playing jazz. I think the song is gorgeous. Just saying the intro was too long for my taste. Brevity may be the soul of wit, but it is also the soul of a great pop song. It's amazing how many great Beatles songs were not much more than 2 minutes or less: Yesterday, For No One, Girl, I Will, In My Life, etc. Love songs are to be sung. Your mate would fall asleep before you even got to the first verse with George's "jazzy" guitar playing.

Well Joseph I am still pondering the sequencing. But I do have the album cover. At the moment I have this listing: 01 Love Comes to Everyone (George) 02 Early 1970 (Ringo) 03 Well Well Well (John) 04 Oh Woman Oh Why (Paul) 05 What is Life (George) 06 Instant Karma (John) 07 Hi Hi Hi (Paul) 08 Woman is the Nigger of the World (John) 09 Devil Woman (Ringo) 10 Letting Go (Paul) 11 How Do You Sleep? Maybe you'd like to make a suggestion.

All good compilations. This reminds me, I read an interview of someone who George picked up at the airport and had a cassette playing of solo songs of all four ex-Beatles, probably in the seventies. I can't remember who it was. Maybe Jim Keltner. It would be interesting to know what tracks George selected.

Love Comes To Everyone can take its place at Track 5. Nice one.

I never knew the thrill of going to the store to buy a brand new Beatles LP, but this was pretty cool. Still my favorite LP along with ATMP. A couple things here, first off I LOVE that extended guitar intro to "Your Love Is Forever" which I think is one of the all-time great Solo Beatles songs! Second, Mike you took the words out of my mouth! One cold night in February 1979 I drive my parents' Chevy stationwagon to Rock Steady, my favorite local record store and in the "New Release" bin is the George Harrison album out of nowhere! This was obviously pre-internet days but I kept an eye on the printed media for Solo Beatles news or listened to the Chicago FM radio stations for music news but this release caught me off guard completely unlike any of Paul's releases back then which got heavy publicity. Man, I bought this album and raced home honking the horn through my neighborhood as happy as if the Chicago Cubs had won the World Series! George's new album made me even more happy than his 33 1/3 album before it! I loved every moment on GH! I would have to wait 37 more years for the Cubs to win the World Series! But George sure hit a home run with me and "Blow Away" was a decent single hit played regularly on WLS Chicago!

Glad you enjoyed that moment of light heartedness Joseph. I can easily go with "What is Life" as a great opener. I really wanted "Love Comes to Everyone" as an upbeat end to the album. But my gut feeling is "That is All" should end it....because that is ...ALL. This was serious hardcore solo Beatles listing and would probably never reach the boardrooms of Apple/EMI/Capitol for a serious release. But these are the days of creating whatever gets your through the night. Your raw listing was most interesting and went deep into the solo work of the Beatles. It's strange but certain songs suddenly grab your attention when placed in a different context in a new playlist. "Pure McCabe" was certainly a different take on my original idea for a solo "Love Songs" album. I suddenly found "Oh Woman Oh Why" ,a previously ignored b-side to "Another Day" in the UK, as one of Paul's tracks that suddenly jumped out at me. Thanks for the inspiration.

I am going to put a feeler out there in an off-shoot of Stavros's post-reviving my original Slider Beatles page LP/CDR recipes, with an explanation of why I picked what tracks I did, and give people an opportunity to comment and even come up with their own LPs. The premise is that the solo careers went as normal, but Capital/Apple would also release LPs with solo material with loose themes and within a certain time period-in other words I don't put a 1970 and 1976 song together...with a few exceptions that would get explained. I will include covers and a back page. Is anyone interested?
