We do not know what happened, the Parties entered into a confidential settlement! The linked article says it was a "draw" but that may not be accurate at all! A settlement does not necessarily mean a draw! One side or the other could have done really well by the terms of the settlement but we will never know unless Paul blabs which he might be prone to do only if he thinks he came out on top! But blabbing could then cost him any benefit he got from the settlement.
The key paragraph in this article to me is this:
"Despite not receiving any pushback from Sony/ATV after sending termination notices, the artist was on alert because one of the company's affiliates successfully opposed Duran Duran's efforts to regain rights. In December, an English court ruled that the interpretation of contracts under English law trumps American termination law and the band's agreement transferred the "entire copyrights" for the "full term" of the copyrights and "implicitly precludes the Group Members from exercising rights under U.S. law which have the result that the Claimant's ownership of the copyrights is brought to an end prior to their expiry."
This Duran Duran UK legal holding that UK law trumps the American law re the right of the artist to invoke termination scared the hell out of Paul! Think about it, The Beatles had to have been primarily acting under UK law re any songwriting ownership issues! Both parties wished to avoid bad precedent being made for their respective sides so a confidential settlement was entered into and that is not precedent.
I suspect Paul got something out of this but it is unique to his individual case and this is of no precedential value to any other old Rock Star in the same boat as Paul.
On the other hand, maybe Sony beat down Paul and Paul limped away glad not to owe Sony millions in legal fees if it looked like he would lose if the case he brought was actually tried!
I suspect Paul got compensated well but perhaps did not get back the rights to the songs under the US termination laws re copyright. Or the songs will revert but Sony still gets a piece of the action!
We just don't know! If Paul starts boasting, then we know he did well but that would be unwise as Sony could then litigate to enforce the confidentiality agreement and Paul would then end up losing whatever settlement benefit he was to receive and then owe Sony legal fees!
We will not know unless Paul blabs but that would be very unwise for him but since when has that ever stopped Paul?!
