What would be your pick for the best John Lennon tribute song?
Among of the choices for this would be:
Paul McCartney - Here Today
George Harrison - All Those Years Ago
Elton John - Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny)
Queen - Life is Real (Song for Lennon)
David Gilmour - Murder
Bob Dylan - Roll on John
Feel free to add any I may have missed.
My favorite would be Here Today.

My favorite song would be All Those Years Ago. Just for the lyrics, though, it would be Here Today. Murder is pretty rockin'.

Here Today would be my choice too. I don't know if you could count this as an exclusive John Lennon tribute song but I thought I would post this song. It would fall under pop songs that mention John Lennon. It's George Michael's John and Elvis Are Dead. I hope this video doesn't get deleted too like the other video I posted. Cool song.

The Cranberries "I Just Shot John Lennon"
It was the fearful night of December 8th. He was returning home from the studio late. He had perceptively known that it wouldn't be nice. Because in 1980, he paid the price.
John Lennon died, John Lennon died, John Lennon died. John Lennon died, John Lennon died, John Lennon died.
With a Smith & Wesson 38, John Lennon's life was no longer a debate. He should have stayed at home, He should have never cared, And the man who took his life declared,
He said I just shot John Lennon. He said I just shot John Lennon. What a sad and sorry and sickening sight. What a sad and sorry and sickening night. What a sad and sorry and sickening sight. What a sad and sorry and sickening night.
Ah, ah ah ah, ah...
I just shot John Lennon. He said I just shot John Lennon. What a sad and sorry and sickening sight. What a sad and sorry and sickening night. What a sad and sorry and sickening sight. What a sad and sorry and sickening night.
Ah, ah ah ah, ah..

I guess it's a cover but at the time Roxy Music's Jealous Guy was described as being a tribute. It's a great version in my opinion.

I'd like to add The Late Great Johnny Ace by Paul Simon. It's really eerie and kinda scary to see what happens on stage when Paul gets to the part when he sings about John. The timing of it much have scared him shitless.
I was reading a magazine And thinking of a rock and roll song The year was 1956 And I hadn't been playing that long When a man came on the radio And this is what he said He said I hate to break it To his fans But Johnny Ace is dead
Well, I really wasn't Such a Johnny Ace fan But I felt bad all the same So I sent away for his photograph And I waited till it came It came all the way from Texas With a sad and simple face And they signed it on the bottom From the Late Great Johnny Ace
It was the year of the Beatles It was the year of the Stones It was 1964 I was living in London With the girl from the summer before It was the year of the Beatles It was the year of the Stones A year after J.F.K. We were staying up all night And giving the days away And the music was flowing Amazing And blowing my way
On a cold December evening I was walking through the Christmas tide When a stranger came up and asked me If I'd heard John Lennon had died And the two of us Went to this bar And we stayed to close the place And every song we played Was for the Late Great Johnny Ace

Way back when I was very young and synth pop was all around I always thought this track by the Human League was tribute to John Lennon. It was released in 1981 and seemed to me to be about John Lennon. But no it was about JFK... Then there was this song by Mike Oldfield which is supposedly about John Lennon's murder. I have no idea how that one works. Even Mike Oldfield says it might be subconsciously... But there you go....
I think my favourite tribute is George's All Those Years Ago

I love All Those Years Ago, but stylistically Empty Garden has to be the best.

I love All Those Years Ago, but stylistically Empty Garden has to be the best. Agreed! And it is hard to find but Elton gave one hell of a performance of "Empty Garden" on SNL back in the day! I had trouble finding it last time I looked but you can't watch that one with dry eyes! Elton is very emotional in the performance. Paul and George both have very good songs for John for sure but I have been more moved by others' songs as indicated and maybe it is because they wrote more as a fan of John themselves and thus more in my shoes than Paul and George who knew John as an imperfect brother. Dylan's "John" song is so surreal and bizarre yet I feel that it is the thought that counts and the fact that Dylan so acknowledged John even decades later meant a lot to me. In many places there Dylan just throws out song title or lyrics which seems lazy(like Ringo might do) but he ties that into surreal and bizarre word-play that deeply moves me even if I have no idea what Dylan is talking about half the time in that song! Dylan sounds heartbroken so I feel heartbroken! There is a lot of debate on that song among Dylanites some claiming it is no tribute to John at all but I take it as such.

One of my favorite George quotes is from that Rockline interview where the host says Dylan is like a modern day Shakespeare and George retorts “Dylan makes Shakespeare look like Billy Joel!”

Hey, a Lennon tribute I dislike greatly is Queen's "Life Is Real!" I just watched a lyrics video of it and references to Freddie breastfeeding himself are weird and I got no good vibe from it.
Self-indulgent trash was my opinion, tag on the Lennon tribute to try and sell some extra copies.

Although never mentioned by Jeff as a "tribute" to John-I always felt that Jeff was channeling John's rocker style in this song that was a hit the summer of 1981.

It does have that "Lennon Rocking Vibe" and I am thinking of the subsequently released but contemporaneously recorded "Nobody Told Me." ELO and Jeff look so young there!
