Another point I'd like to make. I'm no huge fan of "American Idol", but why can't a star come out of such a show? Meaning that, suppose we leapt ahead in time and unknowns named Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Madonna -- or WHOEVER - auditioned in 2008? Would you say "these people are untalented - they came form AMERICAN IDOL"...? Elvis was just a guy driving a truck who went in to record a song for his mama. Where do people get this bizarre notion that bonafide talents are somehow "bestowed on us through the cosmos", or something, and cannot be discovered anywhere else? Would you laugh at Bob Dylan or Neil Young auditioning on AMERICAN IDOL in 2008? Would Simon and his cronies boo them off during their audtions? I think it's a damn safe bet they would have, so what does any of this mean? Could be a good spin off thread- What performers with several top ten hits or albums to their credit would have gotten the boot on Idol? Granted-most of the judgment is based on vocals-not songwriting or musicianship: Roger Waters Bob Dylan Neil Young Ringo StarrJohnny Rotten Joey Ramone David Byrne Rick Ocasek Billy Corrigan Kurt Cobain I actually liked the show (American Idol) until I heard that the auditions ignore many talented people over idiots like William Hung-because it makes for good television. As per the suggestions of JoeK and mikev, we'll start a new thread of classic rockers and debate how they would have done on American Idol based solely on their talents. And to keep it within the topic range of this page, we'll remove Ringo from the list.

I didn't suggest doing this thread, Fred.
Also -- I don't know where you take the liberty of removing Ringo from consideration on this list. It was mikev's suggestion to have him there, and I think a valid one.
Fred, I get along with you very well on the boards, but I just don't understand this business. I think what irked you is that the seed for this thread was sown in your Monkees thread, and you didn't want to upset that thread with "American Idol" chatter. I've got your back in that thread, but really ....
If we wanted to keep this AI thread in the main message area, we could easily and cleverly have used the Beatles as part of the subject line: "WOULD RINGO OR THE OTHER BEATLES HAVE MADE IT ON AMERICAN IDOL"?
Bah.

Bah. I think I should have rephrased that this thread was inspired by what you and mikev discussed, Joe. Didn't mean to cause any undue confusion. A Beatles/American Idol thread could still be started, nothing saying it can't be done. Let's go for it.

My only request at this point is to centralize the issue-if we want some responses.

assuming this is the place to post names, a couple more:
Mark Vollman and Howard Kaylan(Turtles) would have got tossed, even though both can sing their lungs out-so peg them in as great vocalists that would probably get thrashed by Simon.
