REVIEW: LIVE BEATLES AT THE MAPLE LEAF GARDENS – Misterclaudel (mccd117/118) 2 CD Set
By Beatle Bob
Last year Misterclaudel acquired another rare audience tape recording of the Beatles, this time of their performance in Toronto, Canada, from the Maple Leaf Gardens show on 8/17/66--adding one more live concert to appear in the in last few years. Granted it’s not as historical as the Memphis ’66 show with the infamous “cherry bomb” incident, but historically it is nice to have another live show appear.
This tape appeals only to hardcore collectors who will need to have every bit of audio in their expansive collections. This is not a set you play for pleasure. Sonically, the Beatles performance is muffled and distant and offers no revelations. Historically though, this set puts more of a perspective on their concerts as it includes the opening acts, including the well regarded Barry and the Remains for the first time. The Remains garnered excellent reviews on this tour and were using better sound equipment that impressed the Beatles—and which they reportedly used. For some reason the audio sounds a bit clearer and defined on the sets for Bobby Hebb, The Cyrkle and The Ronettes, but not by much. The owner of this tape made this an audio documentary of the experience by recording a first hand impression of what he was seeing and experiencing --along with interviews with friends and folks on the way to and from the arena. I kind of enjoyed this narrative, adding a different dimension to what it was like to a attend a Beatles 1966 concert first hand. One of my favorite comments heard is from a woman: “I don’t expect to hear them”.
As usual, Misterclaudel issues their releases with an insert on heavy stock paper. My qualm is that the reproductions of the ticket stubs and newspaper article is too small to read. The inside of the insert is blank. This space could have been used to show reproduced on a slightly larger scale.
This may not be the most exciting Beatles piece ever offered, but kudos have to go out to Misterclaudel for his attempts at acquiring new items for the collector--even though this is something you may not ever listen to more than once.
