Some of you will have already noticed George on the cover of the August Uncut (UK) magazine. The article is called "The Dark Horse" and it's really quite nice, focusing on George's career and life in the period of 1970--1980. There are some photos I've never seen and some interesting tidbits from people like Paul, Pattie Boyd, Legs Smith, Delaney Bramlett, Klaus Voorman, Jim Keltner, Ravi Shankar and more. Now that George is safely gone and buried, the reverential tone is gone somewhat, and there is some refreshingly frank discussion of his problems in life and relationships, but it's nicely balanced with an generally appreciative tone towards his work and his humanity.
There's a brief buyer's guide to his 1970--1981 albums, which is nice although I found the article in general somewhat savaged one of my favorite records, Living In The Material World. Yes, it received as somewhat overly sober and preachy at the time, but it was also a massive commerical hit, something unfortunately not mentioned in the article, which treats it more like a disaster (it was anything but).
It's always interesting to remember how his solo albums were much more appreciated in the USA than in the UK. The epitome of this is Dark Horse, which reached #4 in America but failed to chart entirely in George's home country!
The best thing about this issue of the magazine is the 'free' CD which is called While My Guitar Gently Weeps and features covers of George's songs by contemporary artists, as well as some curios such as songs that inspired George, including Carl Perkins, Elvis, and Everly's originals. I have to say that Damon & Naomi's 2005 cover of "While My Guitar..." is probably one of the greatest covers I've ever heard in my life! It almost brought me to tears...
So, a nice mag if you're willing and able.
