REVIEW:
MCCD97 - The Lost On-Line Master
LIVERPOOL EMPIRE THEATRE, "IT'S THE BEATLES". DECEMBER 7, 1963
Original On Line Tape Source version and Original & On Line Tape Source Fixed.
This is the first release from a major bootleg label of the complete unadulterated upgraded audio that surfaced on YouTube recently. To date, I’ve only heard brief segments of that audio via YouTube, but it was hard to discern much, as I prefer hearing any audio played via my stereo system and not via my small (cheap) computer speakers at home and work. So it was a nice surprise to finally hear the complete tape on disc, with having the option of blasting it out of the stereo speakers (when no one was home of course). This always a concert I've liked, but due to the fair sound quality on all previous existing bootlegs, I could never give it more than one spin at a time. This tape rectifies that and it is now more than a listenable representation of their Liverpool Empire TV show. This doesn’t mean the sound is near perfect or “Ultra Rare Trax” quality or as good as the Sweden radio show just two month's earlier. It’s still an off-line mono recording, but from a new source now made available to collectors. The quality previously available was always a fair sounding recording, now becoming nearly a very good recording, good enough for multiple spins in my CD player. It's really a nice upgrade. I know Purple Chick has also released this on his Live Before America set,(I haven't aquired it yet), but the one difference between this release and PC's is this is this offers the complete unadulterated complete YouTube audio, whereas PC’s set uses up to 2 different sources on some of these tracks. From what I hear PC did a seamless job on those edits and I can’t wait to hear it. It’s possible you’ll need both sets. One for the restoration from PC and this for the complete unadulterated tape.
This tape presented on this disc contains two versions. First up is the version as presented on YouTube; Original On Line Tape Source Version and a 2nd version; On Line Tape Version Fixed. To my ears both versions aren't that different. They slightly improved upon the pops and clicks in the original source making it more palatable on the ears, but the tape still has minor sound fluctuations and still feels a bit compressed. But...this is certainly a find (Thank you to whomever released this online)and worthwhile upgrade to all previous available versions you’ve heard. The Fixed version though, restores the “Third Man Theme” to the end of the "From Me To You" instrumental play out from the surviving video (seamlessly) as the YouTube source faded just before they ad-libbed this theme as the credits finish rolling (as on the previously older bootlegs) yet (as on the surviving "B-Roll"), the camera's were still rolling, so it seems they continued to play on. You can hear the YouTube version start to fade on the "Fixed" version and then comes up again when the edit happens. They should have edited it about 3 seconds earlier. Using headphones you can also discern a hum or slight buzz (giving it away to me) that it most probably was taped off small tv speakers back then. Versions of "Money", "I Saw Her Standing There", "Roll Over Beethoven" rival the 1963 Swedish Radio show's performances just two months earlier. The Beatles, were hot playing for their hometown crowd. With more clarity (though not perfect like I said) here on this new tape, I end up liking the balance between vocals and instruments just like in Sweden. Though, Sweden is still the superior sounding audio between the two. John’s in good humor and the band is really kicking ass and not "playing by the numbers" just yet. We still get the vocal-less Ringo version of "Boys" but it’s admitingly fun to hear only the backing vocals. You can now enjoy George’s grittiest vocals ever on one of the more frentic versions of "Roll Over Beethoven", ever committed to a live audience by the Beatles. The packaging is typical of the Misterclaudel Label.
My only gripe about this release as it comes too soon after their "IT'S THE BEATLES AND ROYAL VARIETY CLUB PERFORMANCE" SET (mccd 77 & mcdvd 11), and that maybe they should have offered this up as a free upgrade or a discounted price -- or at least couple it with another future upgraded audio (from another concert) taking the sting out of paying for it once again.
Otherwise, this concert now take a higher place and standing in my live collection and ranks up there as one of the best by the Beatles due to the upgraded nature of the audio presented on this disc.
Tracks below are repeated on the disc, once for the Original On Line Tape Source version and then for the On Line Tape Source Fixed Version.
"It’s The Beatles!" - December 7, 1963
1: From Me To You
2: I Saw Her Standing There
3: All My Loving
4: Roll Over Beethoven
5: Boys
6: Till There Was You
7: She Loves You
8: This Boy
9: I Want To Hold Your Hand
10: Money (That’s What I Want)
11: Twist And Shout
12: From Me To You Instrumental playout (Third Man Theme)
If you haven't downloaded this from YouTube or you're a collector of original factory pressed bootlegs, then you'll find you need this in your live Beatles collection.
I hope you all get to enjoy this upgraded audio through whatever means you prefer to aquire it.
Enjoy!
