REVIEW:
BOOTLEG DVD - "ODDS AND SODS BUT UPGRADES" (HIWAX)
With this new bootleg DVD release, HIWAX presents an excellent collection of upgraded Beatles performances that is well worth aquiring.
Presented here are performances that are re-edited and synced up to newer audio or performances where he removed the TCR time-code, making it more palatable to the eyes and taking away that as a constant distraction. It's not perfectly done, but damn close and good enough to be impressive all around. This collection shows a love and devotion to preserving and upgrading Beatles performance footage worthy of everyone's collection. This DVD release resembles MMRecording's "Missing Pieces Vol. 1" and stands as a nice companion.
The highlights of this DVD are the Shea clips re-edited using Hollywood Bowl recordings. Something HIWAX made me aware of after my review was initially posted on other boards as I thought it was the raw soundboard that surfaced last year....AND the "Twist And Shout" is compulsory mix of 8/29's instruments plus 8/30's vocal. Nice job!
Also, highlights are clips that have TCR time-codes removed from performances of "Some Other Guy", "I Want To Hold Your Hand", "You Can't Do That", "I Feel Fine" for example, and the upgraded "Twist and Shout" from Festival Hall, Melbourne is a nice highlight. I also liked watching footage from 1/15/04 Paris concert for once, and seeing upgraded footage of the Beatles from Thank Your Lucky Stars lipsyncing "All My Loving". There is rare audience Hollywood Bowl and Washington DC footage that is synced up to existing audio, but these are the only situations where it's hard to watch as there is not one song that is complete. It's very choppy. The highlight of sorts was finally having the Floral Hall color film. It is presented as a "film investigation". I watched this with bated breath only to be let down with no conclusion or logical guess--which it made me believe it was heading towards.
Othewise, this is a great companion to MMRecordings "Missing Pieces Vol. 1" and I hope would possibly be meant as a sampler for complete remastered (upgraded and TCR-less shows) instead of the one off performances presented from these shows.
It's comes highly recommended and I look forward to future releases like this from HIWAX.
