REVIEW: INDIANA STATE FAIR & MONTREAL FORUM (Misterclaudel mccd-76)
Part of their “Live Chronicle Series"
By Beatle Bob
Adding to their “Live Chronicle Series”, Misterclaudel recently issued another live Beatles CD containing the radio broadcast tape of the Indiana ’64 concert, as well as coupling it with an audience tape of the Montreal Forum (also from 1964).
Both concerts have been issued before and it’s nothing to get too excited about. Differences in the Indiana tape based on comparisons vs the latest Purple Chick version (from Convention Hall Wisdom) and the Yellow Dog version (from The Ultimate Collection Vol. 1) --by doing a/b comparisons, show that the Indianapolis tape is a bit too bass heavy and feels a bit squelched on the high end (on the PC set). The MC set is very similar to the YD set, yet offers a tad more high end without loosing the bass frequencies or getting hissy.. It has a slightly better sound stage for this mono recording. It all probably comes down to just differences in the way they approach using eq, but I tend to find this MC set has a bit more clairity without sacrificing something else in return. The MC set also works out some slight audio drops on the low end and eases it out a bit, but still noticeable. Not perfect, but I prefer this set to both the PC and YD versions. Is it necessary to own? Well, it’s up to you.
As for the Montreal audience tape, I’ve only given it a cursory spin and it’s one of the better audience tapes I’ve heard of the Beatles (one I’ve never acquired until now), but not one you’ll listen to for pleasure. Being an audience tape it’s really your choice whether you prefer the MC version or the version on the PC set.
All and all for me, a hit and miss set. For the collectors of the MC “Live Chronicles Series” (like myself now), you’ll definitely have to aquire this especially for the Indiana concert.
Regards,
Beatle Bob
