REVIEW: BRAVO BEATLES! BLITZTOURNEE (Misterclaudel 108/109/110/111)-2 DVD/2 CD Set
Part of the "Live Chronicle Series"
By Beatle Bob
For collectors like myself who dabbled very little in bootleg videos or DVD over the years (I concentrated on CDs as the quality was always better), it’s nice now to have a label like Misterclaudel that is presenting very common (and sometimes rare) footage in the best quality to date, (for the collector’s market) and now finally warrants me upgrading my collection with excellent quality DVDs and new material that I might have shyed away from knowing the previously available best versions were at the best mediocre. What’s great is Misterclaudel presents these new “Live Chronicle Series” as the last word on a show or tour, combing archival footage, 16mm and 8 mm home footage, newsreels, press conferences and soundboards combined with audience tapes to give you a complete overview. It’s nice to have it all in once place!
Finally, I have the Munich video from the ZDF-TV (on DVD #1)that is a major upgrade to my collection. It is presented in absolutely gorgeous b&w video that is stunningly clear and free of digital artifacts. The audio is sharp to go along with the image. It rocks! The tv sound engineer’s low vocal balance can’t really be improved upon so the vocals are still not evenly mixed with the music, but it’s still the clearest and sharpest audio I’ve ever heard of the Munich ’66 concert. Just too bad the complete concert doesn’t survive on video in the ZDF-TV archives. But aside from this, all we have on video from ’66 is from Japan . So it’s a blessing we have this much from the German tour. This is what makes this set a winner. There are other highlights like the color 16mm home footage shot close to the stage, and synced up with the audio. Nice to see it in color, but of course any home footage suffers from being incomplete and choppy. None-the-less, excellent to watch and gives you a different perspective. (Supposidly this has been released on an earlier DVD). Plus, the footage is in better shape than I expected. Also on this disc is a ZDF-TV report in German. For me I just skimmed thru it as with no subtitles, I was lost. (Subtitles is the next level bootleggers should try). Quality is rough on this news report. There’s also another German TV report, “100 Jahre” in color (more recent) and it’s in German again. Skipped right thru it.
The set also offers on DVD #2, 16mm home footage from Essen and Hamburg, also synced up to the lesser quality audience tapes of those shows. It’s nice to see these other concerts, but once again it’s choppy and the sound quality naturally suffers from audience tapes. There’s also two b&w news reports. But, I have to add that Misterclaudel did an excellent synch job on all 8mm and 16mm footage. No complaints. Much better than the synch jobs done on Picture Perfect DVDs. The DVD is rounded out by Hamburg color 8mm film that also includes Paul’s “My Brave Face” and a trailer for this set.
The two CDs offered include the audio of the Munich video (sounding identical to the DVD’s audio of course)and audio from newsreels, and tv reports that has some of the Beatles songs in the background. The 2nd CD offers the audience tapes of Essen and Hamburg. Being audience tapes there’s not much you can do with them to make them better, but to my ears there has been some digital enhancement that makes them sound just a bit clearer and up front. Not by much, but it’s something. The set comes also with an insert with short liner notes.
For me, it’s an essential and historical documentation of the German ’66 tour. It may resemble other sets released previously (as I don’t have those), but for a collector of factory made silver bootleg sets, this is a must-have for it’s high quality all around, and it’s near completeness. I’ve played the Munich DVD many times already just because of the visual and audio quality is superb. I highly recommend this set.
