I read about 'How do you sleep' before I actually heard it - it was referenced in Roy Carr and Tony Tyler's 'The Beatles - an illustrated record', which I read when I was twelve. The song was obviously controversial - I think Carr and Tyler referred to it as 'vitriolic' - so I was keen to hear it. That would be where I first read about it too. We didn't have as many Beatles' books back then. ;D I would have read about it Christmas 1975. I was very disappointed too after my first listen of HDYS! I thought it too slow paced although I liked the lyrics. I loved "Gimme Some Truth" because it was face-paced and George played a more stabbing guitar solo. To me, that was more like it, more rocking to my 13 year old self! I have come to better appreciate the emotional power of HDYS even though I try to remain objective about the sentiments of the song.

There seem to be two songs on 'Imagine' where JWL is working out his frustrations. One is 'How do you sleep', which I was never really that fussed about - the other was 'Gimme some truth' which I love. Like you say, JSD, it ROCKS!! In some ways, I wish Gimme some truth had found its way onto 'Let it be' - where it was trialled but discarded. It would have been a great rocking Lennonian couterpart to Macca's 'Get back' and 'I've got a feeling'. (Admittedly, Lennon supplied the middle 8 to the latter track, but Macca rocks considerably harder).

Gimme Some Truth would have been great on Abbey Road along with All Things Must Pass.
To make room on a 45 minute LP I would eliminate I Want You and Maxwell's Silver Hammer.
The biggest thing I dislike about I Want You is the lack of lead guitar chops during the fading appregio.

"Gimme Some Truth" is a classic Lennon rocker. Powerful vocals and music and lyrics that are both serious and humorous.

I actually heard 'Steel & Glass' before 'How Do You Sleep'. Before 1974 I hadn't purchased any John Lennon album's prior to 'Walls and Bridges', which is my favorite Lennon album. I had also gotten the Roy Carr Beatles' book and was curious about 'How Do You Sleep' and when I finally heard it the first time the thing I noticed was how much it sounded like 'Steel & Glass'. In 1974 I heard John and Paul were on friendly terms again and I wondered for awhile why John would do that and later figured out the reference to Allen Klein

The rule was you only had three chances. Usually people would start saying "Stop" too early or wait too long, but one time my roommate hit it perfectly and we all found that pretty freaky (especially him). I still have the urge to say "Stop" over 25 years later!

The first time I ever heard I WANT YOU (She's So Heavy) was wearing headphones at deafening volume. I didn't realize it ended like that, and when it did - I freaked.
