So this morning I'm in the car with the wife and I'm listening to my satellite radio, and the Casey Kasem 1974 Countdown. I tuned in just in time to hear Ringo's "Only You" get played, and then a few songs later, I was shocked to hear Casey play Paul's "Sally G"! He said it was a hit on the Country Chart (#3 or #4, I forget which) ... but I never thought it ever made any chart.
But I've always liked "Sally G".. anyone else? Furthermore, it contains one of Paul's best-ever lyrics IMO, and which I bet John Lennon could have written:
"I'm on my own again, I wonder if she ever really understood. I never thought to ask her what the letter "G" stood for, But I know for sure it wasn't good."

I never thought to ask her what the letter "G" stood for, But I know for sure it wasn't good." I knew it charted--I rememer seeing it in THE BEATLES FOREVER--but how high? I thought it peaked on the singles (Hot 100) chart at 39; this site agrees: www.connollyco.com/discography/paul_mccartney/juniors7.htmlThat concurs with Keith Badman's book, page 149. And yes, I LOVE "Sally G." It's Paul taking his Sgt. Pepper method of operating, but putting on a cowboy hat and boots rather than the circusmaster costumes. He makes it work, because it's not a parody, but rather a geniune tribute to the genre. The lyrics took a little bit of work (unless he got lucky on the first draft!), and the production is splendid. I made a copy of this for a friend that was working as a DJ on a country station about 7 years ago. I didn't tell her who it was, and she was knocked out by it. When I told her, she said "Oh, yeah, it DOES sound like him, now that you mention it." I couldn't get her to play it, though! Too strict a playlist on the Clear Channel station, I guess. JcS

It was the B side of Junior's Farm. Not sure if it's ever been on an album.

I heard it a lot in the day, but not recently. My wife even ordered me the "Wings At the Speed of Sound" import CD because "Sally G" was on it!

Definitely not on Wingspan....?
Sally G is one of my favourites, which I regurlarly hear on my MP3 player at the Gym each day, along with "Letting Go" and "Mrs Vandebilt".
Joe, I had a similar thread/post years ago asking why they disliked this song and "Pipes Of Peace", could never understand why?
To me they are both great tunes.....!

I've found the lyrics..and i do have the song after all....
Somewhere to the south of New York City Lies the friendly state of Tennessee, Down in Nashville then I met a pretty Who made a pretty big fool out of me. And they call her Sally, Sally G, why d'you wanna do the things you do to me? You're my Sally, Sally G took the part that was the heart of me, Sally G.
The night life took me down to Printers Alley, where Sally sang a song behind a bar. I ran my eyes across her as she sang a tangled mime, I used to love to hear her sweet guitar.
And they call her Sally, Sally G, why d'you wanna do the things you do to me? You're my Sally, Sally G took the part that was the heart of me, Sally G.
Me and Sally took up, things began to look up, Me and her were going strong.
Then she started lyin', I could see our love was dyin'. I heard a voice say, "Move along, move along".
Well now. I'm on my own again, I wonder if she ever really understood. I never thought to ask her what the letter "G" stood for, But I know for sure it wasn't good.
And they call her Sally, Sally G, why d'you wanna do the things you do to me? You're my Sally, Sally G took the part that was the heart of me, Sally G.

Interesting that the commentary referenced in fabfour's post contains the rather snide comment "I know, it’s only a matter of time before Paul starts working Linda’s name into the songwriting credits for “Penny Lane” et cetera" - McCartney's getting bad press and wildly inaccurate assumptions coming from the suggested name reversal on the credits.

Count me in as a lover of "Sally G." Just yesterday, by the way, we heard "Junior's Farm" nice and loud in a brew pub we were eating at. JF sounded great! And "C(rap)-Moon" gets played by Paul in concert!? Now vectis, as the article pointed out, the writing credits on JF/SG seem to have changed over time. Writing credits seem a fluent, ever-changing thing in Macca's Whacka World! The writer was just having some fun. ;D

Heart Of The Country-Paul That is a great group of songs for what you wanted to capture. John's "I Know(I Know)" has always been one of my favorite of his from the solo years especially as on the remixed and remastered Mind Games album.

One of the lines of the lyrics shown has an error:
I ran my eyes across her as she sang a tangled mime,
The correct words are:
I ran my eyes across her as she sang "A Tangled Mind".
This is a reference to Hank Snows song "A Tangled Mind". Some of the lyrics are: Cryin' cryin' all of the time I've got a broken heart I've got a tangled mind". Reminds me of how Paul felt for about a year after Linda's death.

For anyone who's never heard SALLY G but wants to, here is a link to it:
By the way -- on that Casey Kasem show, the song was in the Top 5 Country chart somewhere, at least according to Kasem.
