Earlier today, I wrote a fairly lengthy post on the topic of favorite solo albums under the 'Beatle Solo Albums' thread (free plug), and I rated Walls and Bridges fairly high. It's no masterpiece (none of the solo-Fabs records are, in my opinion, except for JL/Plastic Ono Band and All Things Must Pass), but it's a nice, craftsmanlike album and a very unique one in the (brief) Lennon canon.
My question, not being very familiar with the Lennon Anthology or Bootlegs (or Menlove Avenue LP) is: Were there any worthwhile outtakes or alternate songs from the Walls and Bridges sessions? And if so, are any of them worth hearing?
I feel Walls & Bridges has about nine quality tunes, but I don't really rate "Bless You", "Beef Jerky", or (for obvious reasons) "Ya Ya".
Besides those questions, I'd be interested to know any of your thoughts about this record, and how you rate it against other Lennon stuff. . . Thx.

I am not aware of unreleased songs from that session but there are lots of great alternate takes of the Walls And Brigges sessions.
Menlove Avenus as you mentioned is a starting point. The Lennon Anthology has more and even the recently released remastered W&B has a great, stripped down "Nobody Loves You(When You're Down And Out)" that seems a little different than what has been commercially released. There are cool bootlegs like Something Precious And Rare.
My biggest problem with all of Walls And Bridges are the overuse of horns! I love these stripped down, alternate studio versions before the horn overdubs!
I also prefer any version of "Whatever Gets You Through The Night" without Elton John's vocal.
All in all though, I still give Walls And Bridges high marks and I sure played the heck out of it from 1975 to Double Fantasy in late 1980 as it was John's last studio album of original material for those five long years.

I have Vigotone's three-CD set -- "Listen to This..." It has rough mixes, alt. takes, rehearsals, demos. I'm not sure if other sources have appeared since this release, but it's probably more than most anyone would want from these sessions.

Interesting. . . so, is that release entirely the W&Bs sessions??

Vigotone has similar multidisc sets for Lennon's other LPs: Absolute Elsewhere, Imagine...All the Outtakes -- I can't remember the other names. They're all pretty good.

Walls and Bridges outtakes are great. It proves that the songwriting was great quality only let down by some over production on the final released product.

This Vigatone thing is a bootleg, right? So I can download it guilt-free?
Agree about the production problem. The one thing Mind Games has over Walls & Bridges is that it still has that warm, organic, early 70s sound; whereas W&B sounds like the harbinger of disco. Nevertheless, I think W&B is much better song-wise, and certainly more inspired.

There is this Bootleg floating around out there somewhere.. I might even know how to get you a copy...

Menlove Ave and the Anthology tracks gave me a real appreciation for W&B. I love it.
Has Menlove Avenue been remastered/remixed like the rest of Lennon's catalogue?
Cheers, 9
