Run-DMC Metallica Jeff Beck Bobby Womack Little Anthony and the Imperials Let the debate begin . . . Metallica? I guess I understand, but they wouldn't be punched on my ballot. Bobby Womack? Is he from the veterans' committee or something? He and Little Anthony confirm what I said earlier about the bottom of the barrel. Overall, this could be the weakest set of inductees ever. The Monkee cage will be going wild now.

Overall, this could be the weakest set of inductees ever. I think last year's was the weakest. This year? Jeff Beck and Metallica keep it from sinking like a lead zeppelin. Now I can leave Jeff Beck off my "if so and so is in, then so and so should be, too" harangue.

Jeff Beck is the only one for whom I could muster up a vote.

Jeff Beck here too, only. Well, maybe Little Anthony too...
But you see? Anything goes. The Monkees are so much more deserving, when you've got lists like this.

I disagree. I'll play Cohen, Mellencamp, Madonna, the DC5, and the Ventures against that five any day. Quick. Without Googling, name 5 songs each by them. Hmmm. Thought so. Now, quick, name 2 albums each. I rest my case. Okay, I'll give you one more try. Name 1 person for each who recorded their first song 25 years after they recorded theirs who was influenced directly by them. Remember, don't cheat! Yeah, that was a weak class.

DC5:
1. Glad All Over 2. Bits & Pieces 3. Because 4. Havin' A Wild Weekend 5. Anyway You Want It
Madonna:
1. Holiday 2. Like A Virgin 3. This Used To Be Our Playground 4. Ray Of Light 5. Get Into The Beat
John (Cougar) Mellencamp:
1. Pink Houses 2. Jack & Diane 3. Hurt So Good 4. I Fought Society 5. R.O.C.K. In The USA
I concede the others are harder for me, but the above I just rattled off without referencing the internet.

Sayne, no Googling necessary. That was easy. Madonna Like a Prayer, Music, Ray of Light, Like a Virgin, Live to Tell; True Blue, Madonna Influenced: Kanye West (especially his latest CD, to cover your 25-year dictum) Ventures Walk Don't Run, Secret Agent Man, Outer Limits, Hawaii Five-0, Sleigh Ride; Ventures in Outer Space, Christmas Influenced: anyone who picked up a guitar, say Dept. of Eagles Leonard Cohen Hallelujah, Tower of Song, First We Take Manhattan, Suzanne, Bird on the Wire; Songs by Leonard Cohen, I'm Your Man Influenced: Fleet Foxes John Mellencamp Rain on the Scarecrow, Small Town, End of the World, I Need a Lover, Cherry Bomb; Scarecrow, Uh-Huh Influenced: Felice Brothers DC5 Catch Us If You Can, Any Way You Want It, Do You Love Me, Bits and Pieces, Glad All Over; Albums -- no idea but what does that matter? They were a great singles band. I can't name a Little Richard album either. Influenced: Hold Steady (not 25 years but I'll stand by it.)

It's tragic that lead singer Mike Smith died 10 days before the ceremony. Thank you, Jann Wenner!

NOW --- how many songs by THE MONKEES can you name off the top of your head? I'd wager it's more than 5.

About Leonard Cohen ... The man is a giant in the world of music ... And you don't have to take my word for it, here's how the All Music Guide (AMG) starts Leonard Cohen's bio. with ... One of the most fascinating and enigmatic — if not the most successful — singer/songwriters of the late '60s, Leonard Cohen has retained an audience across four decades of music-making interrupted by various digressions into personal and creative exploration, all of which have only added to the mystique surrounding him.
Second only to Bob Dylan (and perhaps Paul Simon), he commands the attention of critics and younger musicians more firmly than any other musical figure from the 1960s who is still working at the outset of the 21st century, which is all the more remarkable an achievement for someone who didn't even aspire to a musical career until he was in his thirties ... You can read the rest of his - pretty long! - biography here... www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:aifrxql5ldte~T1The man has been covered by more than a thousand artists all over the world, from musicians as diverse as Johnny Cash, Nick Cave, Fairport Convention, Laurie Anderson, John Cale, Bob Dylan, Nina Simone ... There is at least three tribute albums that celebrate his work and he was the subject of a documentary film "I'M YOUR MAN"... Leonard Cohen may not be enough *Rock&Roll* for the taste of certain people but he surely belongs in any Hall of Fame that cares about contemporary music!

Oh! And Jeff Beck is also a shoe-in for the HOF ...
I mean ... The Yardbirds, the Jeff Beck Group and all his great solo albums, the man has more than paid his dues...

I wouldn't classify him as rock and roll, but he certainly provided many rock artists with outstanding material over the years. So, I guess my stance on Cohen being in the Rock HOF is changing a bit. His influence is far-reaching.

Bah. Induct Ringo, the Monkees and the Zombies then close it up. The inductees for the last few years truly don't belong, and for the most part have never issue music in the genre once known as "Rock and Roll".

Bah But... What is Rock&Roll if not a melting pot of Delta Blues/Folk/Jazz and Rockabilly ...
