What do you think about this list's ranking of the top musicals of all time? www.ew.com/ew/gallery/0,,20164491,00.html?iid=top25-20080719-25+greatest+movie+musicals

I thought that was pretty high for a rock and roll film. I'm pleased with its ranking.
I think that Funny Girl should have been higher and Babs' Hello Dolly should have been in the top 25.
My vote for #1 would be West Side Story. I was glad to see Cabaret high on the list, it is a creepy one with the strangeness and evilness of 1930's Berlin but is very good.

South Park?? I don't think so.. Yeah, I was distressed to see that too and I thought for a moment that the whole poll was bogus, a set up, because of that ridiculous position. I like South Park okay but nothing about that movie puts it in the top 1000 musicals!

"Oliver" and "Paint Your Wagon" are glaring omissions, in my opinion. Old Fred is going to want to substitute "Yellow Submarine" for "South Park"; I'm just sure of it!

I don't really see a Hard Days Night as a Musical so it's suprising to see it here. I'm not much for Musicals at all. I never thought of the Wizard of Oz as a Musical but it is a Classic. The South Patk Movie is a Musical twisted as it is(and one of the Modern successes in that Genre). I think many of the others are very dated and hold little interest for those that didn't grow up with them. Just my 2 Cents .

I have a really hard time seeing A Hard Day's Night classified as a 'Musical'. As for the genre itself, I have little to no use for 'Musicals.'

You know, I hear you both! However, I remember years ago being very surprised and pleased hearing Roger Ebert say that when he taught film classes he often showed or referenced A Hard Days Night (the black and white -hand held camera-cinema verite aspect of it) and called it the second best musical of all-time (after Singing in the Rain). I always say I hate musicals and won't go out of my way to see one, but when I do, like West Side Story, Grease, Chicago, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Across the Universe, and others, I have a good time. Go figure.

Each to his or her own but my taste in movies runs more toward anything Humphrey Bogart, John Wayne or Clint Eastwood. For me, watching a 'Musical' is a lot like going to the dentist.

Go figure. Good post. I'm a big Ebert fan and I miss Siskel. Ebert is quoted as saying he has seen and taught that film at least 25 times. One of his favorite. The fact that the film budget was only $500,000 easily qualifies it as being the greatest musical off all time. All the other musicals on this list's budget were far greater than the Beatles. The bottom line is that the Beatles were a phenomenon. In any category they are number 1. Even the so-called Magical Mystery Tour flop was praised by the leading filmmaker of our time, who goes by the name of Steven Spielberg. Need I say more?

"uh...uh...because of all this excitement, I can't remember if I fired six shots or only five. Being that this is a .44 magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and would blow your head clean off...you have to ask yourself a question. Do I feel lucky? Well....do ya punk?"

One of the rock stations in Philadelphia once played the above soundtrack, followed by......Mick Jagger singing "Yes, I'm lucky! Yes I'm lucky!" ;D

"Wasn't all that bad?" I'd put PAINT YOUR WAGON on the top of any list of movie musicals I tried to make. Of course, when I looked at the 25 chosen, I think I'd seen about 1/4 of them, so I'm hardly an expert.

Do you remember seeing "Clint Eastwood Meets Mister Ed" on 'The Mister Ed Show' back in the early '60s or on reruns? Slap me silly but this show still makes me laugh to this very day! ;D

Favorite is "High Plains Drifter." Too cool! But I digress...sorry for the hijack! JCV

Actually, no. I probably wasn't born yet. ;D Kids...what are you gonna do? ;D Yep...agreed on 'High Plains Drifter'...way cool. But I have a question for you, JCV, or anyone else that cares to join in. What is your take on the character Clint Eastwood played in 'High Plains Drifter?' Was he a ghost come back from the grave to seek revenge on the towns people? Or a relation of the Marshall there to set things right? I think he was a ghost. Another one of my favorite Clint Eastwood movies...'Heartbreak Ridge.'

I watched part of it one night back in the mid-80s with my nephews and nieces and brother-in-law (We didn't have cable at the time, and the VCR was still new,so pickings were mighty slim, so sue me! No, Huck, not literally! ) Anyway, one of my nephews (who was 7 or 8 at the time) pointed to Clint and said, "Is he a good guy or a bad guy?" My brother-in-law looked at each other with equal deer-in- the-headlights looks. Fortunately, my brother-in-law came up with a very diplomatic answer: "Well, he's not totally good, but he's better than the townspeople!" That seemed to satisfy my nephew. Yet another digression...

I'm surprised nobody else has made this post, but I'd say "Help" had better music than "A Hard Days Night" so from a pure musical standpoint, I'd rate it higher. I also like it better as a movie because of the color as opposed to black & white.

But I do like the movie "A Hard Day's Night" better since it shows a day in the life of the boys. It gives us as close up of a view as we can get to one zany day or so in their lives. JCV
