The other day I was looking through a big hardcover book of articles from Creem magazine and I came across a George Harrison interview from 1987. Toward the end the interviewer mentioned McCartney's furious bass on Old Brown Shoe, and George said that it wasn't Paul, it was he himself playing bass, surprising the interviewer. George added something like "That's me playing bass out of control, just like I play guitar." The first half of the interview is mostly about George's current album Cloud Nine and then it goes into other aspects of George's career.
Creem started in the Detroit/Ann Arbor area in 1969 and it was sort of a harder-edged alternative to Rolling Stone. Unlike RS it didn't dwell on non-rock stuff like politics, and it had hilarious captions under the pictures. It focused on hard rock, punk and metal. I recall they often had stuff about the Stones, Ted Nugent, Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, Rockpile, David Bowie, Zeppelin, and others. For some reason they always trashed Rush!

Hit Parader, too. No chance you could post a link to that George interview, could you?

I remember Hit Parader too. That magazine focused on hair metal bands like Motley Crue, Van Halen, Twisted Sister, Def Leppard, Ratt, etc. from what I recall. The same with Circus magazine. If I find that Creem interview with Harrison online I'll post a link.
By the way in that hardcover book there was also an article from 1969 about the Paul is dead rumors that originated in Michigan. It brings up some creepy stuff for those who like searching for clues.

What a fantastic article! Nice to step out of time and read it and listen to George again. I really enjoy his observations and humour. Thanks, Wolfsblood!

The demo on Anthology is George only and he plays - from memory - the bass line on guitar. It is very similiar to the released record.

Thanks so much for the link. I missed that interview back then (wasn't following Creem after 1980 or so).
Several things I found interesting:
1. George says he "wracked his brain" for the title of Cloud 9. Which leads me to... 2. He is much too positive about "Blood From a Clone" -- I've always loathed that song. I know the story behind it and all, but he would have been much better off using "Wrack My Brain" instead of giving it to Ringo. Same theme, more or less, but more to the point and a better song. 3. George didn't care much for the cartoons -- "nauseating." 4. I'm glad to have some more details about the players on specific Cloud 9 songs. 5. George always gets me when he talks about how much the Beatles "gave." Sure, they got a lot as well, but it is so true that the cost was high for them. It reminds me to give them all a pass once in awhile as to the "post-Beatle" years.
