Huck, My wife and I are Disney World passholders. We just got the schedule for a concert series being held at EPCOT this fall. Why am I telling you this? The artist playing on November 3-5 is....... [drumroll please] David Cassidy! If you can manage to break away to Orlando, this will fulfill one of your life long ambitions! Unfortunately, it's a Monday through Wednesday, so I won't be able to make it. But you can, if you can convince your wife! You can check at disney.com for details. Best, Tom (aka W. O'B.) P.S. I probably should have pm'ed this.

Cool! I would scream like a 10 year old schoolgirl seeing David Cassidy. I might throw items of clothing on the stage in rapture. He seems to have come to terms with his Partridge Family past. He use to be bitter which I thought was silly. It let him live a life we can only dream of. I don't like when David changes the arrangements to the songs, i.e. techno or dance, I want them sounding just as produced by Wes Farrell! Thanks WO'B

The two are David Cassidy and John Oates, you know, the short, dark, perky one from Hall & Oates.

Hey, that reminds me JSD...where's that Partridge Family bootleg you promised me where Shirley and David have a meltdown in the studio? Did Rueben finally buy up all the copies and original master tape to save their image?

From "Daydream Believer" to "I Think I Love You." I am kind of selfish though and wish David Cassidy wasn't sharing valuable stage time with Davey Jones. I would prefer to have David only but this may be my best chance to see him. Guess I am not going to Florida, W.O'B., as my guy is coming to Chi-town!

I'll be seeing the Davids' at the St. George Theater in Staten Island, NY on September 13th with my dear friend Lin who's a major fan of both. I'll try and give a detailed report. I've seen Davy many times on his own and with The Monkees. I've seen Cassidy once before and was impressed on what a showman he is. It should be a really fun show. ;D www.stgeorgetheatre.com/events.htm

You and me both, sister! I would have to be revived. In fact, one of my pet dreams is to pass out at a David Cassidy concert and the only open spot for the EMT's to drag me is on stage and as I'm coming to, David goes to one knee beside me and sings "Brown Eyes" from the amazing Sound Magazine album to me! That would be tremendous. I have brown eyes.

Was David wearing leather? No. But, I'll tell you the rest of the story. First, the St. George Theater on Staten Island is a beautiful restored old theater which presents concerts and theatrical productions. Everyone remarked on how gorgeous the theater is. It still needs some work, but what's been done so far is impressive. Davy Jones went on first and he gave a great show. He performed the Monkees' hits, including Mike Nesmith's 'Papa Gene's Blues' and 'Consider Yourself' from the musical 'Oliver!', in which Davy made his American debut on Broadway. He told some funny stories, though a few may have been inappropriate for the younger members of the audience. He was very animated and for the encore of 'Daydream Believer' brought on some female members of the audience on stage to sing along with him. After his portion of the show he appeared in the theater lobby and signed autographs and posed for photos with the fans. After the intermission it was time for David Cassidy. He wore a white silk shirt and was playing killer electric guitar. He also played drums while the female drummer took center stage to sing a Pretenders song. He performed some Partridge Family hits, including 'Heartbeat' which raised the roof and got the female fans screaming. However, when some fans were screaming out to him, David chided them and appeared to be a little condescending. He did some new beat arrangements for a couple of songs associated with him, 'I'll Meet You Halfway' and 'Cherish'. While hearing the songs this way was interesting, it was not the way the fans remembered them. It sort of reminded me of when George Harrison similarly performed some Beatles songs with different arrangements during the 1974 'Dark Horse' tour. David also performed some songs not overly familiar to the fans, including playing a really tasty blues guitar. Cassidy is an excellent guitar player and his playing was very impressive. Before the encore he sang 'I Think I Love You', then for the encore he performed an old standard which was nice. The audience started to leave early even during the encore. The overall feeling of the evening was that Davy Jones gave the better performance, being more personable and approachable. Cassidy, while professional, seemed a little more aloof and a bit full of himself. Where Davy appeared to embrace his Monkees' past, Cassidy, on the other hand, while acknowledging his stint in the Partridge Family, pretty much kept it at arms length, especially with the new arrangements of some of the songs. The consensus was that Davy won the evening. Here is a YouTube link of Cassidy doing the new version of 'I'll Meet You Halfway' from the Staten Island show. You can also find more links for the Staten Island show on YouTube through the link: I'll Meet You Halfway I Woke Up In Love This Morning Here's a video of David Cassidy's 1990 comeback song 'Lying To Myself'. Not bad. And here's a link to a Monkees message board I'm on with a little more info on the shows. monkeeland.yuku.com/topic/6533/master/1/?page=1

Thanks OldFred for that review and links. I was afraid of that: smug David showed up and not groovy David who made many of us swoon in the very early 1970's. You can't beat Wes Farrell's original production of the songs, it simply can't be done. Techno Partridge has no soul! "I'll Meet You Halfway" is one of the most melodic, gorgeous songs ever but not as a "beat" song. David needs to learn to live with his legacy and not fight it. He can and should make new music with today's sounds but when covering the classics, they need to sound like the classics. Thank goodness Paul McCartney always kept the same arrangements(except now the register of his voice it would seem) and the one time he strayed was an unmitigated disaster: the techno-beat "Coming Up" from the 1989/90 tour with "Master Chris Whitten" on drums. That really sucked. Macca's techno "Coming Up" debacle should have been a lesson for David. I don't know what I'd do if David chided me for screaming. I'd be pretty crushed. Maybe I should just not go to his show and keep the perfect David Cassidy concert in my head.

For John, the original version of 'I'll Meet You Halfway'. (I'll have the hankies at the ready.) And here's the 'groovy' David with the Osmonds at Wembley.
