I.U.'s venerable Men's Basketball Program, that has won five NCAA National Championships and done so honestly, has been on very hard times for the past four years after lowbasso and my Alma mater inexplicably hired known cheater Kelvin Sampson(by a President now fired) who lived up to his reputation and got us in deep trouble with the NCAA. But I.U. is back! Two weeks ago we beat arch-enemy and #1 Kentucky and tonight, sweet New Year's Eve 2011, we beat #2 Big 10 rival Ohio State!! I.U. Hoosiers!nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/45836804/ns/sports-college_basketball/To paraphrase Dick Vitale(in loud, hoarse voice): I.U. baby! They are dancing in Showalter Fountain, John Cougar Mellencamp, drinking at Nick's, JSD Mumbo Stomp, stark naked baby, diaper dandy!

Second, yeah, I was proud at how those kids stormed the floor at Assembly Hall at I.U. The storming of the Bastille was not as dramatic! Tonight the kids did not storm the Floor. I used to follow IU a little in the Bobby Knight days but I barely have time for Louisville these days and what with keeping up with the Beib. (I don't know how to do the Smilies and I wanted to make sure you knew I was kidding with that one.)

My law school there in Bloomington got sold too but we never call the rich guy's name! It wasn't called Jacobs School of Music until about 5 years ago when the Jacobs family gave $40 Million to the music school. The wife was a music major there back in her day so before her husband kicked the bucket, she told him she wanted to give the music school a shitload of money, and she did just that when he died. When you give a school a cool $40 million, they'll call it whatever you want them to call it....He also gave a chunk of money to the city of Cleveland so they now call the stadium where the Indians play baseball after him as well. In my day it was just IU School of Music. And I was there in 1976, when the basketball team went undefeated for the entire season winning the NCAA title. No team since has topped that record. Thrilled to see they are back in the ranks as well! Can't believe they knocked off both #1 and #2 within a month. Go Hoosiers!

Started singing opera professionally in 1978 and after 34 years, I'm still doing it. Have sung all over the world in many opera houses. On 5 DVD's and one Grammy-nominated opera recording. Opera is my work, and The Beatles are my passion. They introduced me to music and showed me how it is done right. I admire genius in music whether it is Mozart or Lennon/McCartney. PS IU Jacobs School Of Music is one of the premier classical schools of Music in the world today. I would love to go back there to teach voice someday when my performing days are over.

I have to admit- I'm pretty raw and uncultured when it comes to opera, but I respect the intensity and skills it takes. I call the various classical genres "real" music, but it is nice to know that some of you in that end of the music spectrum think highly of pop music, particularly the Beatles. I do listen to classical music, but am no expert. I wish Paul would reach into his pocket and tour with a real orchestra. He's only done a few shows, but it was a great blend of pop and instruments. And for basketball, I remember the 1976 team with Scott May. I was a basketball junkie. Didn't a bunch of them play on the USA Olympic team?

And for basketball, I remember the 1976 team with Scott May. I was a basketball junkie. Didn't a bunch of them play on the USA Olympic team? Scott May and Bobby Knight's favorite I.U. player, Quinn Buckner, starred on the 1976 Gold Medal Men's Olympic Basketball team. All college kids and that is when the Soviet Union was big and bad in all sports! Last year I rented from Netflix the 1976 National Championship Game between I.U. and fellow Big 10 team Michigan and that 1976 I.U. team could play. We hear how athletes today are so much better than the old guys, in better shape, etc. but that I.U. team could dribble and just do all the fundamentals. And man did they play above the rim even though they weren't allowed by the rules to slam dunk so I don't want to hear that they weren't athletic. I.U.'s Bobby Wilkerson(hurt rather early in the 1976 N.C. game against Michigan) was amazing. He was a skywalker who played well above the rim, a great defender too. I came to the conclusion that the 1976 Indiana University Men's Basketball Team could destroy any college team subsequent to them. They had fundamental basketball skills, they were smart and, because of Coach Bob Knight, they were physically and mentally tough and some like Buckner were just mean sons of guns. If they were permitted to dunk they would have torn the rims down! Wilkerson #20, May #42, Buckner#21, Tom Abernathy#33 and Kent Benson#54 In 1976, my Dad got a room for our family at the then Lafayette, Indiana Hilton Hotel as he had tickets to I.U. vs Purdue University. The team stayed there before the game but did not spend the night, just hung-out pre-game to rest, have a team dinner and do walk throughs in a big room. I got all of their autographs except Quinn Buckner who basically said no, he was focusing on the upcoming game. At the time I was disappointed but now I think it was cool that I was told by Buck to get lost! ;D He said he would sign one after the game but my little 13 year old self pointed out that I would not see him after the game. Bingo! Scott May was awesome as he sat at the foot of his bed in his hotel room with the t.v. on showing the old B&W Mickey Mouse Club. Oh the days before cable t.v. and unlimited HBO or Showtime at a hotel! He signed my paper and was very cool. He also gave me great advice because I asked him where I could find Coach Knight to get his autograph and Scotty said something like, "Kid, you don't want to run into Coach Knight before the game!" LOL, I was to learn years later how true that was. Knight would have stuffed me into a garbage can or something! ;D Kent Benson was also awesome, asking that I hold his ice bucket while he signed. He was a tough guy too but nice as could be to me! I still have those autographs on the Lafayette Hilton stationary and I need to get it framed. My brother and I thought that we were in heaven to be the only kids around the team as they rested before that evening's game! I even forgive Quinn Buckner for basically telling me to go stuff myself! ;D

So we were on split sessions (at what became Middletown North) my three years in high school and I had 900 fellow seniors in my class of '73. We never knew half our class though because 450 of them went to school on another session. Those were the days (actually late 60's, and early 70's) when Bruce Springsteen and his band played the swim clubs and the Hullabaloo venue in Middletown. After the riot at Clearwater Swim Club in Middletown (in 1971, I think?), where the police busted everyone for drugs at Bruce's concert, Bruce swore he'd never play in Middletown again, and he never has.

Michigan was who IU beat in the 1976 National Title game to be the last team to go undefeated for an entire season! That year we beat Michigan State at home in Bloomington by only one point. I remember that game we almost lost because Michigan State had this wunderkind freshman named Ervin (Magic) Johnson.... Now Indiana has the wunderkind freshman!! Go IU!!

Well, we won a road game Sunday against Penn State. Penn State had just beat our arch-rival Purdue so they are tough.
The Big 10 is pretty tough this year.

IU is not back. We have lost three in a row including to Minnesota(at home!) and Nebraska(there) and got our butts whipped by a revenge minded Ohio State(there). If you think I get worked up over Beatles issues, look out when I am watching IU Mens Basketball and we lose.

We lost to Kentucky in 96 and beat Kansas in 03. We lost to Maryland in 2002 in the Title game. That was a miracle Tourney run! We beat Duke and then later Oklahoma in the first Final Four game of that tourney. Feisty red-head team leader Tom Coverdale got hurt against OK and that was all she wrote for the Final game against Maryland.

I.U. beat Penn State today although Penn came out inspired by the death of Joe Paterno. State was beating us at half but we came out after halftime and kicked their butts.
MikeV, sorry about the Orangemen loss in South Bend, Indiana. Notre Dame has had some big wins there against #1 teams and I remember watching them knock off UCLA and old man Wooden in 1974 or 1975 ending like a million wins in a row for UCLA! ;D

Notre Dame has had some big wins there against #1 teams and I remember watching them knock off UCLA and old man Wooden in 1974 or 1975 ending like a million wins in a row for UCLA! ;D Starting center Melo was left behind for academic reasons. Not an excuse- kudos to the University for sticking to academic standards, but SU was lost without him even "9" deep. Look for a second loss at Cincinatti tonight.

Tonight's game is getting a lot of hype on ESPN! Dick Vitale: "Syracuse and Cincinnati, baby! Diaper dandies! Marquee match-up, baby! MikeyV playing his guitar on the Jersey Shore, baby, Go Orange! Kings Island, baby, I got sick on the roller coaster!
