Yeah and let's begin how it's ever been done. By dragging Paul into the mud. (See the other thread)

Only in response to the Paul "bumper-uppers".
Speaking impartially.

OK, I'll try and keep that in mind :-) Anyway, it's NOT TRUE that John will be forgotten. On the contrary, Paul's efforts bring more attention to the Beatles AND John. Look here: www.lastfm.de/music/John+LennonJohn has 10 Million more listeners than Paul has, still.

As author of The JSD Postulate, I am among the most radical defenders of Paul in many ways.
Unlike my friend RTP who I do consider a posting friend, I draw the wrath of both Lennon fanatics and McCartney fanatics as many Paul fans throw their boy under the bus for his first four albums(as the Lennon fans do to Paul too).
In any discussion the Paul faithful want to always fast-forward to Christmas 1973 when BOTR was released. I, on the other hand, want us to take our time, walk slowly and savor the Paul of 1970 and McCartney through RRS and "Live and Let Die" of 1973. I always hang my head and cry softly when we get to BOTR.
I am a unifier as I incur the wrath and ridicule of both the John fans and the Paul fans(and even the George fans and the Ringo fans) over The JSD Postulate. If it helps brings folks here together, well I am willing to suffer.

Forget him? I'm pretty sure I couldn't. A bad choice of thread title, I suppose. I mean -- I hope the NEW GENERATIONS of fans do not forget there was once a John Lennon! It's amazing anybody still remembers any of the Beatles. One day they will pass into history, a mere footnote in the discussions of the latter half of the 20th Century. New music is always needed for new generations, that's how it must be. That kids today sometimes will listen to Beatles music at all is an amazing testaament to the strength of their music. The broke up about two generations ago!

I teach high school kids and I see a lot of kids wearing Beatles t-shirts. Without fail, there are always rebels and/or misfit types who wear John Lennon shirts too. I see more Lennon shirts than McCartney shirts. John is not going to be forgotten and I don't think Paul will be either.

When I was in high school and I had to go the teacher's staff room , I noticed that some teacher's had posters of John in there, the iconic one with the New York City t-shirt. At the stage I was a Paul guy because Paul was around and still in with his early 80s hits and I used to think why is there no Paul posters.
Even now as a working adult when I visit clients I see the same poster on desks but I have never seen a Paul one, ever !!
This doesn't mean Paul is not good or that it is even all related to music but I think John transcended the Beatles with everything he did so as a package of a man and what he stood for it has stuck with people.

Speaking of school, when i was at school they used to let you bring in a single to be played over the P.A. between classes.Anyway, i brought in Slade's Take Me Bak Ome. They played it the once and told me not to bring it back, it wasn't suitable. The next day i brought in Eight Days a Week, they loved it, used it heaps.....must have been John's awesome vocals.... I haven't forgotten that....

I see more Lennon shirts than McCartney shirts. Do they make up commercial Paul T-shirts like they do for John? I'm pretty sure they don't. Just like with Marilyn Monroe, there's a lot of Lennon product out there. Fans shopping in stores can't wear what is not being sold. (On Record Store Day this past Saturday I was in a record store where they also sell T-shirts. I saw that iconic photo of John wearing his NYC shirt on a T, but no Paul T's available). But hey, I'm glad to hear that you notice students with Lennon shirts. Are these mostly the males? Yes I would say it is mostly males wearing the Lennon shirts. I have seen a lot of girls wearing Beatles t-shirts. Tend to be LET IT BE or ABBEY ROAD design. I play some of their songs for different themes during health class. A few kids are critical of the music ("old fogey music") but there are always a few that defend the Beatles as "great" or even "the best".

I always say I genuinely feel sorry for anyone who doesn't experience the same joy from the Beatles that I get. But I do add that I hope they find something in their lives that can equal the joy that Beatles music has brought to mine!

I work at a university. Every year there is a crop of new students. It's mostly the girls I see wearing the Beatle shirts.
It's probably been about ten years by now, but this one girl had on an AC/DC shirt. We were talking a little bit. I asked her if she liked the Doors. I said the Doors were the band I thought the young kids would always like.
She said, "At my school, it was always the Beatles. Beatles this, Beatles that!" "Beatles? They're my favorite band", I said, quite shocked. She was aggravated at this point. "THEY WERE GOOD, BUT THEY WEREN'T THAT GOOD!"

I remember in the late 1980's I was talking about the Beatles with some students and one of them was saying he didn't think they were that good. Another student came to my defense commenting, "Oh yeah the Beatles were good-they were even as good as Bon Jovi!".

Yeah and let's begin how it's ever been done. By dragging Paul into the mud. (See the other thread) I guess if Paul's placed into the mud he can keep John company there (RTP likes to keep Mr. Lennon good and muddy ;D ) . I hose him off frequently. RTP in reverse -- reminds me of King Midas in Reverse by the Hollies. I may have to reverse if this trend continues. I would stick up for John in some cases more than Yoko. I remember those quotes from some of the people that worked for them about how Yoko would frequently say "even John can do that" or "even John knows that" as though he were a complete fuckup. I don't remember who wrote about this, but they were fairly well known. It might have been Pete Shotten.

Not round these parts Joe.
I think you may be "over egging the pudding" as they say over here in the UK.
If there was no John then the band wouldn't have reached the stature they did and have the legacy or influence they have.

Dude on American Idol did Imagine last night. He skipped the second verse with "no religion". And he got voted off the following night. Serves him right for being so PC and not even understanding the "no religion" line. Do lots of Religious organisations advertise during the show? If they do then that could be the answer.

LOL, they will be singing "Imagine" in churches yet the way it is being sanitized and revised.
"Imagine" is a humanistic, utopian anthem that disparages the belief in a spiritual deity, any deity, as a main root of humans' problems and that is exactly what the very first verse is talking about.
The "and no religion too" is clearly a shot at organized religion but verse one is a slam on any belief in spiritual beings, a god or a devil, and that would encompass just ones personal beliefs in such even if that person is not involved in an organized religion.
"Imagine" shouldn't be made into something it is not and it is an anthem of atheism and to say it is not is changing it. The first verse is crystal clear although John muddies it by adding "and no religion too" later in the song which is a knock limited to the organized belief in spiritual deities.
John knew "Imagine" was more radical than anything on POB.
I personally disagree with John's first verse sentiments because I believe such beliefs give us hope to carry on but I recognize the song to be fully atheist in spirit. He is just asking us to imagine it so I don't get bent out of shape about it.

Imagine all the people living for today.
Imagine all the people living life in peace.
Imagine all the people sharing all the world.
I take that message from the song John. I don't think anyone's being "slammed".
