Abbeyrd's Beatles Page Message Board II PURE MCCARTNEY Roll-Call updated to include MikeV's supplementing his response:
Steve Marinucci: Free Press Copy of Deluxe, June 3, 2016.
JSD: 4 CD Deluxe Version, maybe iTunes exclusive mix. 4 CD Set amazon.com., maybe iTunes
KC: 4 CD Deluxe Version, 2 CD Version, I'll buy both in store.
Debjorgo: "I got a copy real cheap of the mp3s ...from my own collection...will wait for my retirement..."
Lowbasso: No but has what Solo Paul he needs...concedes could be essential for some fans.
MikeV: "I did this collection with my iTunes in say...about 2 minutes and STILL have the cash in my pocket, but I could put some lighter fluid on the cash, set it aflame and be like the rest of the Macca Hatters..." Mike likewise compares purchasing Pure McCartney to Spanky throwing money out the window!
JoeK: 4 CD Deluxe Version, and Vinyl Version -- "I'll buy both in store."
Fabfour: "I'll buy the 4 CD Deluxe Version when it's in store in Aus."
Stavros: "As regards Paul's new compilation I will be hanging on. You never know someone might buy it as a gift for me."
MarkC: No but might have if it has songs never before on CD.
JoeySelf: "Not going to part with any of my retirement funds for a compilation I don't need and don't think I'd play more than once (disc 3 may not even get a full play)."

Mike, I think I get what you're saying yet I can't help but think if the "Little Lady" gets you Pure McCartney for Father's Day, for instance, you will melt like butter!

The only other thing besides new versions that would tweak my interest is if Paul decided to add several of these to his live act.

Really dumb observation on my part, but Paul is the only Beatle never to have let his bangs grow to the same length a the rest of his hair, which the other three did around 1969.

Man, I keep going to amazon.com and checking, then rechecking, my shipping status! I find myself yelling at my computer screen because my copy of Pure McCartney seems stuck in some shipping center! Mr. Postman, go man go! I am to get PM tomorrow and I am so nervous I will not be able to sleep tonight. I do not view Pure McCartney so much as a compilation of career spanning songs curated by Paul himself but nothing less than a life-changer!

Folks: I received the two-CD version today and am listening to it now. It has a lot more cohesiveness than the four-CD version. Just a thought for you.

Oh really? I know you wanted some type of 'confirmation' for yourself (and the article you posted was very scant and typical of the "why THIS song, but not THAT one?" whining that is so arbitrary )... but I will disagree -- because today one of my record stores jumped the street date and I bought the 4-CD Set today as well as the Vinyl Boxed Version, and I am in HEAVEN! First impressions to follow... PS - note THIS paragraph in your article: "Still, "Pure McCartney" is a substantial, honest and gratifying introduction to the long and winding career of a pop music giant, a tasting menu whetting the appetite for more."

Happily, I was able to buy the 4-CD Set of PURE McCARTNEY, as well as the Vinyl Box. The packaging is awesome, and this could not have come on a better day for me. I had begun the day rather glum, because life's problems were in the way. I phoned one of my record stores that often jumps street dates to see if they had it out yet, and the guy on the phone sounded like he was lying to cover his butt when he said "ummm... but tomorrow is the street date...", so on a whim I drove to the store anyway. And viola! There it was! It was a really gorgeous sunny day here, so I broke open the first CD and played it in my car... cranking the volume loud, and I mean at the MAX... while all windows were rolled down, and passersby could hear the wondrous melodies of Pure Macca!
I have been into Vinyl heavily for the past five years, but man oh man the crisp quality of the CD made me realize just how much I'd loved that format as well. The sound quality was excellent, and sometimes I felt I heard nuances I hadn't noticed before. Anyway, as soon as "Maybe I'm Amazed" oozed through, all the troubles of my day just instantly vanished into nothingness. And by the time I was drenched in the pleasantries of "Listen To What The Man Said", I was in paradise.
I too thought that it wouldn't be a big deal getting odds and ends strewn randomly together, but I soon discovered that this was nicely organized by Paul, and it was a rather cohesive disc (I'm talking about Disc One here). A song like "Warm and Beautiful" (for instance) which I had never reckoned much previously, actually sounded very inviting when sandwiched in between two others form this career-spanning compilation. I gradually started thinking that I was not going to have this collection sitting aimlessly on my shelf forever; contrarily, I think I will be more likely to reach for THIS more often than some of Paul's individual albums. I got through all of Disc One and Disc Two today in the car. I then skimmed Three and Four, and to my ears there aren't any differences in any of the song mixes other than the 2015 "Tug Of War" alterations.
I do think this is an excellent way for more casual fans to become familiarized with Paul's career, and if they hear the 4-CD set I'm betting they will be knocked out at realizing how many good songs this man has actually written and recorded, which they never had know existed. Hopefully this will inspire them to try out more of his individual albums.
The dreariness of today's world just rolled off my back as the magic of this man's music made everything all right today. He is truly a musical genius.

I'm envious of your luck, Joe. Apart from Steve, you are apparently the first board member to get this great new product: Paul McCartney's first career spanning box set. It seems like every relatively minor artist already has one available, sometimes for decades. It's 9:00am on Friday 10th here in Adelaide and I'm headed for the shops in a couple of hours to buy the 2CD and 4CD versions. I know for sure I can get the former, but the latter might be a problem. One chain here is now listing its release date as next Friday. But like you, I have access to a helpful retailer who can sometimes get around things.

Remember when it wasn't PC to slam a career-spanning release? Good luck, kc! I've personally decided not to get the 2-CD version (which, of course, deflates that bizarre theory that the companies 'force' people into 'having everything', or 'making you think you need it all'.)

PS - note THIS paragraph in your article: "Still, "Pure McCartney" is a substantial, honest and gratifying introduction to the long and winding career of a pop music giant, a tasting menu whetting the appetite for more."Yes, I don't deny that. My point is to question the need for us who already have the songs to buy the set. As you said in your post following this I do think this is an excellent way for more casual fans to become familiarized with Paul's career, and if they hear the 4-CD set I'm betting they will be knocked out at realizing how many good songs this man has actually written and recorded, which they never had know existed. I agree. Casual fans or newbies? Go for it. For the rest of us, it's questionable. This is just my opinion, of course -- but I also enjoy a mish-mash of strategically placed tunes spanning a long and varied career. And sometimes that can help me appreciate a song I might otherwise not have thought much of. An example of this presented itself as I listened to Disc 1: I never thought much of "Warm and Beautiful", but the way it was sandwiched in between a couple of other songs here really made me listen and enjoy it. Yes, I understand that we can always make our own "mix tapes", but I like hearing what Paul feels are his most representative songs (even if I disagree with some). There is a really nice autographed message from Macca in the packaging where he notes: "Thanks for being my travel companions, Love, Paul". And though I know it's supposed to be all about the 'music', both the CD and the Vinyl are gorgeous packages with great pics.

I've "acquired" an mp3 version of the Pure McCartney 2 disc set. This will do me whilst i wait for my local music retailer to get the 4 cd deluxe set in store.
I'm going to play it in my car tomorrow.

I would like to know from someone who gets this if the booklet is good enough to make buying all of the songs (again) worth it - just wondering. And Paul would have looked AWFUL with all of his hair the same length - he just doesn't have the right face for that hairstyle!

The booklet for both the two and four-disc versions has the statement about how and why this was put together and the session details. The four-disc has pictures filling out the rest of the pages.

I didn't buy the two disc version either. I have everything on it too. As I suspected, it is on Spotify. I didn't suspect it is a playlist from a fan, but that works for me, if I ever care enough to listen to Paul McCartney's mix tape. Not likely... JcS

Pure McCartney is in the banner roll-by on iTunes. Did it hit the iTunes album chart. No but Beatles 1 is number 9. That's about right.

JcS No, actually, the deluxe version is on Spotify now. And I'm listening to it now and then when I'm at the computer. I've skipped some of the dreck--no way I'm sitting through "My Love" or "Bip Bop" when I don't have to--and think I'm almost to the end of disc 2 of the CD ("Arrow Through Me" is playing as I type this). Really dumb observation on my part, but Paul is the only Beatle never to have let his bangs grow to the same length a the rest of his hair, which the other three did around 1969. That would be because we don't have bangs in England.
