Man, this one hurts! Can this day get any worse?! Yes it probably can. I am getting more texts messages and calls about this death than any other Rocker's since the murder of John Lennon!

I agree JSD. Devastating. TP was huge in American music history. Almost every song in his concerts was like an anthem.

But I agree Mark, he was a great American Rock and Roller and his tour this past Summer was one of the hottest shows around! Young and old dug TP! Thoughts and prayers go out to TP and his family!

It sounds like he is brain dead and has been removed from life support. I fear he is gone. Terrible, terrible, terrible. One of the greats! A personal favorite of mine. An honorary Beatle, in my book.

I have seven albums and a greatest hits disc, and of course there's the Concert for George tracks and the Stevie Nicks duet.
Petty is one of the few act I've gotten around to starting a Playlist for in iTunes. I haven't weeded it down to my favorite tracks yet. I guess I'll be doing that. I certainly will be listening to some Tom Petty.

Unbelievable! Tough news from a horrific day in every way.
Here is Tom's beautiful "Wake Up Time" from his amazing second Solo album Wildflowers:

Only two Wilbury's left. Let's hope Tom is hanging out with George and Roy in Rock & Roll Heaven today!

NBC's Today, this morning, mentioned Petty's unforgettable collaboration with Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison and George Harrison. Apparently they forgot Jeff Lynne.
Matt Lauer wraps the segment up with "and who didn't love the Traveling Wilburys?" Everyone agreed.

Jeez that was one horrible day yesterday. We seem to be seeing more and more of them recently don't we? A dreadful, dreadful thing happened in Vegas and then poor Tom passes away as well.
Tom was loved here in Britain as well. BBC4 are paying him a nice tribute tonight by playing one of his 1980 UK College gigs on TV.
RIP Charlie T Wilbury Jr. We sure are gonna miss ya!

Tom was a smoker, and did a lot of drug use including a stint on heroin. All that leads to cardiac issues almost always. A heart attack at 66 years old with all that history is not uncommon. In fact, it is to be expected. All the more tragic in this case.

Got to see Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers on September 22nd at the Hollywood Bowl. No indication of any illness. Vibrant, rocked, happy. That's why this is really shocking. So unexpected. He was authentically real. That's why rappers to hard rockers to soft poppers to classic rockers to dance divas to country pickers liked him. I once read something that Prince said about Tom. Something like that whenever Tom came on MTV you knew it was going to be good.

TP played in Noblesville Indiana this Summer and it was one of the hottest shows going, tickets were hard to come by even scalping. I did not go but I knew people who did and more people who wanted to go. I have seen TP at least 5 to 6 times and I always really enjoyed his performance. I am still stunned.

Interestingly, this was the first time that I'd seen them in their own right. I saw them at the Concert for George and when they were Bob Dylan's backup band, but never as part of their own tour or show.

Maybe I was too young and dumb still.

My memory has always been as just them backing Dylan, with Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart coming on to join for an encore. Now, I'm wondering if Annie and Dave came out for the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers encore and not the Dylan one. I'm swearing today that it was the Dylan encore, but now you've gotten me to question it. Thanks, Dude. . . .

I saw them June 29, 1986 in a Chicago suburb and it was an all Dylan setlist per setlist.com. Man, I thought I remembered Petty doing some of his songs! Maybe that is why I was not more enthusiastic about the concert: Dylan was fine with a great backing band but what a waste of TP!!

Let's not forget Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were Johnny Cash's backup band for the Unchained album.

I'm watching a Tom Petty doc on Netflix and just saw the part about touring with Dylan and they specifically said that Tom did a set first, and then Bob came on. Now, did they do that in every city? Don't know.

Our Sweet George with Tom Petty at a motor race! I found this on Beatle Photo Blog, among the last photos posted there as it has been silent since February 15, 2017. Hope all is well with Miss Tammy Tingles!

Always fun to see George in a baseball cap! I have been watching a lot of Tom Petty documentaries since his death the best being Running Down A Dream which is four hours and has clips of George in giving high praise to TP and I think I get why our George really dug Tom as like a little brother. He respected Petty's humor, laid-back approach(most of the time, he did not suffer fools though) and Petty's appreciation of the older musicians like George and The Beatles who influenced him greatly. Harrison and Petty was a great relationship and just think of the music we may have lost by George's way too early death! Even if not Wilbury, George and Petty could have made great music together. We do have the Wilbury albums and the great Petty single/video for "I Won't Back Down!"
