Joey, I am simply compulsive on that with albums. As I say, I have never just played Disc 1 of the White Album and walked away from Disc 2! Even if I have a time constraint I will put the world on hold and play Disc 2(and not skip "Revolution No. 9."). This obsessive compulsion will get the best of me though with this four disc Pure McCartney as it is over four hours of songs curated by Paul himself. This happened to me with Bob Dylan: The Bootleg Series, Vol. 12: The Cutting Edge 1965 – 1966 Deluxe Edition which is six (6) Discs and I put on over my Bluetooth speakers the free Amazon Prime AutoRip at the start and listened to what would be the songs on all six discs in one sitting and now I never want to hear 1965 to 1966 Dylan again! I plan to sit for all four Pure McCartney Discs this weekend! Be glad you didn't happen across a torrent of the Complete Cutting Edge--I think it was something like 18 CDs?--or you would have been tied up a LONG time. I have it from a torrent, did some skimming and didn't come back to it. As for the naysayers, remember that small people do small things... JcS

JcS I came so close to buying that "Complete" Cutting Edge because it was billed as containing every note Dylan sang or played in 1965 to 1966. But the price was steep and yeah, when can I sit there for 18 hours? At least with Pure McCartney there are no repeats. If "Ebony and Ivory" is not one's bag, it appears once, not in all 300 takes like Dylan's Complete Cutting Edge would have although Dylan would never do that many takes! Paul might! I love :Like A Rolling Stone" but my six disc version has 20 or 30 versions of it! Now I turn it off the radio. Sometimes too much is too much!

I do like the idea of making EVERYTHING available to those that want it; imagine if we got all the sessions of each Beatles album in a deluxe package. We could hear what Lewisohn got to listen to in writing the RECORDING SESSIONS book--and that'd be cool! JcS

If it was captured on tape i'd like to hear just how much influence George Martin had on song structures in the early part of The Beatles recording career. More than some of the Fabs care to admit i'd think.

When take after take is almost identical to the previous take I can leave it. But... when there are leaps and bounds being taken with each take I can listen all day. Anthology 1 had examples of this. As for Pure Macca, not even on my radar. Still haven't bought McCartney II with all the bonus stuff and I'd love that. After all I love Macca II and Egg (and I am waiting on that and WWL, RRS, and even London) and am more keen to spend my hard earned cash on those. Times are tough, even for a pimp like my me.

I gave credit for the MMT hybrid, then you went clutching at straws , which i can't give credit for. Oh, there are many more pluses for those hybrid Capitol LPs which I didn't even mention ... I just scratched the surface. The truth is, just because EMI released the albums how they did, does not mean they are necessarily the best results. The UK version of REVOLVER is the only album that is superior to the US Capitol, IMO. But the EMI releases were sequenced by the band themselves. The way they wanted their fans to hear the music. John made a point about that whan asked his opinion about all the American Capitol releases. Once homemade copies of music became an option, fans were allowed to sequence tracks to their own personal taste. I chose to sequence all my Beatles Catalogue according to the chronilogical order the songs were brought into the studio for the band to record and find that order best suited to my taste. I like having the songs follow the order that all four were introduced to them in the studio. Many fans, especially first generation, want to hear the songs sequenced exactly like they were on the albums they first heard them, whether EMI releases in the UK or Europe or Capitol/Apple in the States. Second and beyond generations heard them in such varying ways thru compilations of greatest hits or CD versions out of chronilogical order that sequencing became obsolete in that fashion.

John made a point about that whan asked his opinion about all the American Capitol releases. I didn't always agree with John Lennon's opinions -- did you? And just because the Beatles had their own idea about "which songs sound best how and where", it does not necessarily mean that we are required to agree with them verbatim on anything and everything they did or chose. Sorry, but "I Want To Hold Your Hand" makes a great album opener, Beatles! And I love the sequencing on the US Magical Mystery Tour album far better than the way The Beatles ordained the EP's to be sequenced. Just for an example, I love "I'll Be Back" as a second track rather than it closing an album. (Many other examples may be used, but you get the general idea). I love having "She's A Woman" and "I Feel Fine" as part of BEATLES '65. Believe me, I too went through that period where I thought anything but the UK original albums was "blasphemy". In the late '70s and '80s I was a real stickler about having all the music "just as it was originally issued in the UK". And I used to tell some of my fellow fan friends "but there is no such album" when they would cite records like MEET THE BEATLES among their favorites. But then I realized that for the USA, those Capitol albums were every bit as "vintage" and "historical" and a true part of their 1960s growing up experience. Nothing wrong with the albums, and in some cases I think they improved on the British ones. And really, The Beatles never intended for there to be a PAST MASTERS concoction featuring differing singles and B sides that don't jibe well with each other. If we follow exactly "what The Beatles intended", then we are supposed to have a dozen or so stray single 45's around, to play certain songs individually.

I am just wondering if the "Pure McCartney" would have been any worse had Paul just gone for a straight "singles" album:
1 Another Day 2 Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey 3 Back Seat Of My Car 4 Love Is Strange 5 Give Ireland Back To The Irish 6 Mary Had A Little Lamb 7 Hi Hi Hi 8 My Love 9 Live And Let Die 10 Helen Wheels 11 Jet 12 Band On The Run 13 Mrs Vandebilt 14 Junior's Farm 15 Listen To What The Man Said 16 Letting Go 17 Venus And Mars 18 Silly Love Songs 19 Let 'em In 20 Maybe I'm Amazed (Live) 21 Mull Of Kintyre 22 With A Little Luck 23 I've Had Enough 24 London Town 25 Goodnight Tonight 26 Old Siam Sir 27 Getting Closer 28 Arrow Through Me 29 Wonderful Christmastime 30 Coming Up 31 Waterfalls 32 Temporary Secretary 33 Ebony And Ivory 34 Take It Away 35 Tug Of War 36 The Girl Is Mine 37 Say Say Say 38 Pipes Of Peace 39 The Man 40 No More Lonely Nights (Ballad) 41 We All Stand Together 42 Ballroom Dancing 43 Spies Like Us 44 Press 45 Pretty Little Head 46 Only Love Remains 47 Once Upon A Long Ago 48 My Brave Face 49 This One 50 Figure Of Eight 51 Party Party 52 Put It There 53 Birthday (Live) 54 All My Trials (Live) 55 Hope Of Deliverance 56 C'mon People 57 Off the Ground 58 Young Boy 59 The World Tonight 60 Beautiful Night 61 Brown Eyed Handsome Man 62 No Other Baby 63 From A Lover To A Friend 64 Freedom 65 Fine Line 66 Jenny Wren 67 Dance Tonight 68 Ever Present Past 69 Sing the Changes 70 (I Want To) Come Home 71 Hope For The Future 72 Early Days
It may not cover every single in every territory.
Personally I enjoy "Pure" because I'm all too familiar with the Macca back catalogue. It breathes a new life into some tracks that remained buried on some of Paul's albums.
However even "Wings Greatest" didn't cover every single Paul had released up to that point.

Many of their singles would have made great album openers like IWTHYH. But they decided to adopt the "No Singles On Albums" policy early on. I know that. They thought it was good value, and all that. But Me, I have always preferred the single(s) on the album. It's a USA thing, I guess. And even if the UK "singles not being on the LPs" policy was a good one, it is a mess today when trying to scape together all the songs together. Funny how their very first album contained both PLEASE PLEASE ME and LOVE ME DO (and the album cover even promoted and encouraged it (" ... with LOVE ME DO and 12 other songs"! ) .

My revised 4CD Pure McCartney track list.
Out of respect, I have not deleted any songs Paul has decided to include, just used up the vacant space left over on the discs with his choice of 67 tracks. Having said that, I have replaced the 2015 mix of Say Say Say with the original. I don’t think the new mix is an improvement over the old. The original was the global hit. I think the actual release does not include enough rock numbers, so I have added some. I also thought it might be a nice touch to start off the set with Listen To What The Man Said and finish it with That Was Me.
Disc 1 (was 17 tracks, now 20)
Listen To What The Man Said Maybe I’m Amazed Heart Of The Country Jet Warm And Beautiful Dear Boy Tug Of War Silly Love Songs The Song We Were Singing Lonely Road Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey Early Days Big Barn Bed Another Day Flaming Pie Jenny Wren Too Many People Some People Never Know Let Me Roll It New
Disc 2 (was 18 tracks, now 20)
Live And Let Die English Tea Mull Of Kintyre Somedays Save Us My Love Bip Bop Let ‘Em In Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five Calico Skies Hi Hi Hi Waterfalls Band On The Run Appreciate Sing The Changes Arrow Through Me Every Night What It Is Junior’s Farm Mrs. Vandebilt
Disc 3 (was 16 tracks, now 19)
Mumbo Helen Wheels Say Say Say (original mix) My Valentine Pipes Of Peace The World Tonight Souvenir Dance Tonight Ebony And Ivory Fine Line Here Today Press Wanderlust Winedark Open Sea Beautiful Night Girlfriend Queenie Eye Hope Of Deliverance We All Stand Together
Disc4 (was 16 tracks, now 19)
Back On My Feet My Brave Face Coming Up Too Much Rain Good Times Coming/Feel The Sun Goodnight Tonight Baby’s Request With A Little Luck Little Willow Only Mama Knows Don’t Let It Bring You Down The Back Seat Of My Car No More Lonely Nights Great Day Venus And Mars/Rock Show Temporary Secretary Hope For The Future Junk That Was Me

What a suck up! Vectis, I think even you would buy KC's version of Pure McCartney, he fills in some critical gaps! I am a little dismayed that on this Board of strong, dedicated, knowledgeable Beatles/Solo Beatles fans it seems that there are only three or four of us who dig Pure McCartney even though we recognize its flaws. I think it is time to take The Post-JSD Pure McCartney Countdown Roll Call now that Pure McCartney is released and the dust has settled. Let us do the cut and paste approach. I'll start: The Post-JSD Pure McCartney Countdown Roll CallJohn S. Damm: Purchased it through amazon.com at the superb price of $31.68; have not had 4 1/2 hours at once to play it all in one sitting; although I lament the absence of the entire Wings Wild Life album here(the songs could be spread out), the absence of any songs from FITD and DR, and other critical omissions, I recognize this Solo career spanning compilation comprising of songs curated by Paul McCartney himself to be the greatest "Road-trip" album ever! When I next drive to Boston from Logansport, you know what I'll be trucking to for 4 1/2 hours on that highway!

Debjorgo: Did not buy. Still have not listened to it.

KC: I bought the 2CD version on release day in-store, but couldn’t see the 4CD version in any of the several places I visited that day, so I got it from Amazon. Interestingly, I paid for expediated postage to get it quicker and still paid a bit less than what it would have cost in a shop here.
I haven’t played the box all the way through. That’s just not the way I approach this sort of release. One disc at a time is about all I will bother with.
As I’ve previously indicated, I think the 4CD box set could have been better. I would have left off a few of the songs, such as Bip Bop, Warm And Beautiful and Girlfriend, replacing them with personal favourites. However, I don’t want to sound too critical. I think that overall this release is very good. I’ve been waiting a long time to finally be able to buy an extended career spanning Paul McCartney best of set, which is how I see Pure McCartney, not as just a road trip mix tape.
If I had assembled the box the songs would be arranged chronologically. I figure we have been able to program track listing ourselves for a long time now. However, I know Paul McCartney does not share my view on this: Wings Greatest, All The Best and Wingspan are all jumbled as well.
Four discs is a common format for box sets, but the scope is there for an even more comprehensive set. With extra space I would have included missing hits and more of the widely acknowledged better album cuts. I probably would have incorporated a few rarities consisting of B-sides and unreleased material. On reflection though, I’m not completely sure I would go down that path. Paul has so much of this type of material that a separate box set altogether might be the way to go. Maybe the best option would have been a five disc Pure McCartney, a multi disc set of studio rarities and another of live material?

So as not to seem too negative and to keep on John S. Damm's good side, I'll remind him of my love of postulate era Paul albums. I had McCartney on LP, and the original CD release. I got the archives series book, and two disc version too. Same with RAM. I'm waiting breathlessly for the Wings Wild Life releases. And though Red Rose Speedway was a let down for me, no real strong rocker (The Mess was a bonus CD track), I'll be getting the book release when it comes out and I bet the two disc version will look pretty bitchin' in my hands too.
I liked all the Wings albums but those early albums have a special place for me.

Replaced on ipod with John and Yoko Life with the Lions CD special addition with bonus audio footage of Yoko farts and John passing a kidney stone. Mike, that is amazingly open-minded of you to enjoy Life With The Lions! Many a Beatles fan has expressed disapproval of that album! I would look at that $32.00 in your pocket and recognize, sure you and Mrs.V could go to Denny's and each have The Grand Slam Breakfast and with tip spend that $32.00 or you could buy Pure McCartney and instantly create lifelong memories!

I think simply stated that the re-issue of Wings Wild Life and Red Rose Speedway will be amazing, turn heads and be stunning!

What a suck up! Vectis, I think even you would buy KC's version of Pure McCartney, he fills in some critical gaps! Given that, as far as I'm concerned, the critical gaps are stuff I haven't got, that seems unlikely. The Beatles first played this trick on UK fans with A Collection Of Beatles Oldies - an entire album full of stuff you already had, just to get Bad Boy, the one track you didn't have. I am now too old and, given the amount of money of mine which has gone into McCartney's pockets over the years, far too mean to buy 4 sodding CDs of stuff I've already got. This pointless release actually makes me quite angry, given the amount of good unreleased stuff which remains in McCartney's vaults.

Roll Call Response: I haven't bought it, and never for a minute thought about buying it. Why would I? If I want a 4 disc McCartney hodgepodge disc, I'll make one for myself--and it won't have "My Love" or "Ebony and Ivory" or "Winedark Open Sea" or "Girlfriend" or "Souvenir" or...any of several others.

The Post-JSD Pure McCartney Countdown Roll Call
John S.
Debjorgo: Did not buy. Still have not listened to it.

We all know that you are old Vectis, but that shouldn't stop you from enjoying a solo career spanning compilation of songs curated by Paul and his team! We are all young at heart!
