Does anyone know the details on those new Lennon CD remasters? Release dates, or what's going to be what?

Thanks for the link, Fred. But I must say I'm really confused as to what is what there. I'm mixed up between whether this is all the solo albums separately, or in a box with other bonuses, or whether there are multiple "hits" collections, etc... Is there ONE big box set that has it ALL, or what?

Is there ONE big box set that has it ALL, or what? I was confused, too. What I think there are are multiple options. One would NOT buy all of them. There is one option for someone who just wanted the HITS. There is another option for someone who wanted JUST the remastered CDs. So, it's basically just depends on what one wants. The casual fan would just want the collection of singles or hits, while the avid John fan might want the whole kit and kaboodle. But, no one will want to buy all the options because they would be buying the same songs twice, thrice, and maybe 4 times over.

Not again. Yoko's repackaging of John's "Greatest Hits," "Legend," what have you...is excessive, isn't it?

Not again. Yoko's repackaging of John's "Greatest Hits," "Legend," what have you...is excessive, isn't it? Yes, it's really excessive. It happens to other artists too, a lot of times ... but yeah, John's repackagings are really repetitious. At this time I only have the 1982 JOHN LENNON COLLECTION, and that's because it contains Move Over Ms. L. I never bought LENNON LEGEND, or WORKING CLASS HERO, or whatever else. Oh, I used to have that LENNON 4-CD set, but I sold it off a while ago. Just too much of the same stuff repeated. I'm not interested in any of the "hits collections", unless there's something significant there, like new tracks.

It's a shame that you didn't buy the Working Class Hero collection, Joe. It sounds amazing. Many of the songs were remastered and a lot of the "thin-ness" of Lennon's work was fixed.

I was looking at Amazon and it appears that the upcoming remaster for WALLS AND BRIDGES will retain John's original 1974 cover, with his drawings.

Thanks for the link. I've listened to the provided samplings from all of these tracks, and I have to ask ... what is the point of this? I'm very into outtakes, demos, etc., but really all these seem to be are the regular tracks as they've always appeared on DOUBLE FANTASY, but of course with the vocals pronounced and much of the other instrumentation and backing diluted, or removed. I consider myself pretty much a Lennon Completist when it comes to new material, but I may just actually pass on this release, now having had a chance to hear the stuff first. I don't think I need this.

It still seems to be a full band- just no additional backing. The difference between this and Menlove Ave is that those tracks were in fact live rehearsals of Walls and Bridges. This isn't live, though some of the Cheap Trick stuff was.
Not sure if I'll bite.

Hey, I am pumped about this having just listened to the samples!
My passion is finding and collecting studio quality alternate takes with John Lennon's single tracked lead vocal!
For instance, the "I Feel Fine" with just John's single-tracked lead vocal(or maybe even a guide vocal) is my idea of heaven. If only I could find John's single-tracked vocal for "In My Life."
I don't like the rough, Bermuda DF demos because the sonics are poor. This is awesome, man "Woman" and "Watching The Wheels" in particular sound so cool in this stripped down version.
This is John Lennon in our living room singing to us in a crystal clear voice, no overdubs, no double-tracking or multiple tracking on his lead vocal. No tricks, no slowed down vocals, no sped up vocals, no reverb, just John's natural voice at studio quality.
I have goose-bumps! Some good news for once.

As such, this changes the original album's intent completely. I think it's going to be interesting though, because here we have an album you're into very much, and one which I think is a waste to bother with. In fact, it may actually have me putting one of my rare marks against Yoko!

You can go back to 50 years of pop/rock or just about anything else and do the same. Beatles remastered-same general mixes just cleaned up, sharpened Lennon-Mind Games, YS 1997- remixed and remastered-you now hear stuff you never heard before from the same recording Love-all bets are off Let it Be Naked- sort of what Yoko is doing- they (um, Paul) just deleted Phil's orchestra work- left most band stuff intact. Did use some 1970 biproducts such as Paul,George and Linda's harmonies on Let it Be compared to the original live oohs from John and George. Lennon DF-now you are purposely deleting stuff- something fans are now doing with Beatle Rock Band tracks. Certainly interesting, but again- where do you draw the line?

I think this stripped down DF is just for us hardcores. Notice we are getting at the same time the regular DF but remastered so that will be the one we know and love(or dislike for those who don't like DF). LIB...N was for hardcore's too and LIB as we knew it still exists. The wild ones for me are those Lennon remastered and remixed albums from 2000 to 2005, Mind Games included. Those did replace the albums we knew and loved. I think that will be corrected with these 2010 jobbies. Don't get me wrong, I mostly love the remixed versions, especially MG and RnR, although I don't like the shortened songs like "Meat City", "We're All Water" or album cover changes like W&B. The Beatles Yellow Submarine album remains so the YS Songtrack doesn't bother me and I thought that it sounded great. Back to stripped down DF, it lets me hear John's voice stripped down to its basic greatness but in studio quality, not that crappy cassette tape quality. I would hug and kiss Yoko for this. I wish she'd release all John's solo albums stripped down like this just for us hardcores. I am going to write(or e-mail) that thought to her.

I'll wait and listen to mp-3s/Youtube postings before I decide-the clips weren't enough to sway me.

Why do you have to draw a line? As long as the original recordings are out there, I'm all for giving us something different. I WANT something different, I've already go the recordings I've had for over 40 years!

I WANT something different, I've already go the recordings I've had for over 40 years! That's just it ... this doesn't sound very "different"! I want different, too. Not just the same exact recordings, but with John's voice louder on the tracks, or some music missing.

My problem with it is exactly that-you are messing completely with "released" product. You can go back to 50 years of pop/rock or just about anything else and do the same. Right. Besides the fact that it's not very different to me, it's just wrong, IMO, to mess with DOUBLE FANTASY like that. I like the JOHN LENNON ACOUSTIC album approach, but not sripping down the actual DF. Agree with YELLOW SUBMARINE (loved the new soundtrack album version), but MIND GAMES is a mixed bag for me. Actually, there are little nuances I'd been used to hearing on the MG album that were MISSING from the remastered CD! I liked some of LET IT BE NAKED. Particularly songs which really sounded somewhat new and different (like DON'T LET ME DOWN). The ones that were much like the original released takes served no purpose, other than to sparkle up the sound. Other than the acoustic WHILE MY GUITAR GENTLY WEEPS and the alternate takes of STRAWBERRY FIELDS and A DAY IN THE LIFE, I have zero use for the LOVE album and all that annoying "meshing".

Well, I am a hardcore fan and yet I would tweak her nose and smack it down for doing this crap to DOUBLE FANTASY! ;D Talking about just trying to make a buck off something! (See? here's another rare example where I disapprove of something Yoko's done. Enjoy it while you can! ). And this may sound hard to believe coming from me, but I've never enjoyed the sound of John's voice alone during these 1980 sessions. There was some of those "vocal booth only" presentations on the Lost Lennon Tapes and all that did for me was hear the imperfections in John's singing voice, actually.

I've heard two tracks from DFSD: "Starting Over" and "Beautiful Boy." Of the two, "Starting Over" was the one I liked better. It's the charming song without all the choral backing.
I'm going to write more in a day or so, but you have a preview. (Been hung up watching baseball. My SF Giants are looking goooooooooooooooooooooooooooood!)

I had forgotten that today was the release date for the 2010 remasters, but I was in Best Buy this morning to pick up the Blu-ray of THE EXORCIST, and as long as I was there I checked out the CD section. Sure enough, all of John's remastered albums were there. Also was the GIMME SOME TRUTH COLLECTION, which I don't really have an interest in. Since I'm strapped for cash these days I only picked up MIND GAMES and WALLS AND BRIDGES. The price was tagged at $12.99 each (except for SOME TIME IN NYC, which was $19.99). But imagine my delight when I got to the register and the final discounted sale price came out to be only $9.99 each! Had I known this before, I may have picked up PLASTIC ONO BAND and IMAGINE as well... but at this point I'm still not sure what I intend to do with these re-issues. I was mainly curious to hear MIND GAMES because I wanted to see if the end of MEAT CITY's fadeout was intact. I held a great hope when I spotted a white sticker attached to the cellophane of these discs which said: "JOHN'S ORIGINAL AUDIO MIX".. The first thing I did was play MG in the car, and yup, this is John's original "muddier" mix, all right... and for the first time ever on CD, the end of MEAT CITY is now INTACT! As for the "Yoko" concerns. The packaging for MIND GAMES has a booklet with photos of John and Yoko, and the CD label itself has Yoko and John on it together (a shot of them from behind, standing). So this may irk some fans, I don't know. As far as I'm concerned, Yoko is enough a part of the MG album period. The WALLS AND BRIDGES cover is back to John's original artwork, and there are no pics of Yoko at all in the booklet, nor on the CD label. However, the booklet opens on the first page with a large 2010 statement written by Yoko which says: "Walls And Bridges? That was beautiful, one of the best albums that he made. It's one of the masterpieces of classic rock -- Yoko Ono, 2010". (So I guess this may be something else for Yoko Haters to whine about). Now, I don't think some fans may care to pick these CDs up if they're "Johns Original Audio Mixes"... and I know our own JSD in particular really loves the 2005 remastering of MIND GAMES. But for me, I think it's a cool thing that we've got John's original masters as well as the ones which more more "boosted". After all, this was the way John wanted these.

Hey, is Stripped down DF out today? As luck has it I'll be going to a city where there is a Besy Buy. Hmm. The wife will be with me though and she HATES me buying c.d.'s in general and even more so when these would be my third c.d. copy of most John solo albums but 4th for Walls And Bridges as I bought the Japanese remastered version that had original artwork down to the actual layered cover. Joe, I do love the remixed 2005 MG but I'll like the original mix as long as it is a good remaster job on these 2010 reissues. Today I'll limit myself to DF Stripped down(if it is out) and maybe MG or RnR. Remember, there were changes to JL/POB in the 2000 remixed reissue especially on "God" and the guitar intro to "Hold On John" so maybe I'll buy JL/POB today instead.

I didn't see DOUBLE FANTASY STRIPPED DOWN at the store. I'm thinking of going back tonight and grabbing the other regular albums since they're only $9.99. But after awhile it really makes you wonder, how many versions do you need, and which one do you pull out when you want to hear the album?
I also don't know if I need the "new" MILK AND HONEY (which is probably the same as the last one, wouldn't you think?), or the "new" ROCK N ROLL (the last one was so improved; don't know if I need the "old master" on this?).
Then, as much as I hate the "non-jewel case, thin carboard cover designs", I do like to have everything uniform!

Yeah, I thought the 2000 remastered Double Fantasy and the 2001 remastered Milk And Honey are awesome and can't be improved. These weren't remixed or altered from the original mixes. Joe, did the albums you bought today have bonus tracks? I examined the Lennon Box also out today and the original albums have no bonus tracks although there is a whole disc in the box of bonus material. Amazon.com has that box at like $151.99.
